Retrofitted GE LM6000 Provides Voltage Support at Canadian Power Plant

February 28, 2003

HOUSTON, TEXAS (February 28, 2003) --- GE Aeroderivative and Package Services (GE APS), a GE Power Systems business, has installed a synchronous condenser clutch module on a GE LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbine at ATCO Power's Valleyview Generating Station. The retrofit enables the unit to provide voltage support for the grid, as well as to generate power. Depending upon market conditions, this ability gives ATCO considerable operating flexibility.
The LM6000 began operating in December 2001 at this 45-megawatt Alberta, Canada power plant. GE APS has since retrofitted the LM6000 with the synchronous condenser module on-site over a 30-day period. GE APS also assembled the clutch module, and provided the clutch lube oil system, tooling and electrical hardware, and miscellaneous auxiliary systems.
