Operational Tests Of The GE-Modernized TE10 Locomotive Completed

August 31, 2004

GE Rail announces that a series of winter and summer operational tests on OAO Russian Railways of its modernized 2TE10 locomotive is completed. After a test report is issued by VNIKTI and the results are reviewed with OAO RZhD it is anticipated that decisions on future development will be taken.

In 2002 GE Rail purchased an old 2TE10 locomotive section from MPS and modernized it in the United States. The section was then delivered back to Russia, where it successfully underwent stringent certification tests with the Railway Registrar. In parallel, the diesel engine was certified by GOSSTANDART. GE in compliance with RZhD's requirements provided the section for a series of extensive winter and summer operational tests at the Russian railways.

Winter tests were performed at the North Railway and the summer tests at the Privolzhskaya Railway. The tested section demonstrated that with its BrightStar advanced computer managed wheel slip control system it could haul trains that were 15% heavier than those handled by an existing section and provide full protection for the traction motors with its sophisticated Motor Thermal Protection system. In addition measurements of fuel and lube oil consumption re-confirmed specific fuel consumption at 192 g/kWhr and average lube oil burned 0.28% of fuel burned, while achieving all GOSSTANDART requirements for environmental emissions. The railway personnel who operated the modernized 2TE10 locomotive were very excited about it, too. "We are very satisfied with the GE-modernized locomotive operation"", says Ivan Panchishin, Head of the V.Baskunchak Locomotive Depot, "It is reliable, economical and easy to operate and maintain"".

On September 8-10 Charlene Begley, GE Rail President & CEO, is arriving in Russia to review the positive test results and hold a series of meetings with executive governmental officials and top management of the leading railway company.
