OMV Again Selects ICL Technology from GE Oil & Gas

November 10, 2009

Three Units Set for Gas Compression Facility Near Baumgarten, Austria

LE CREUSOT, FRANCE---November 10, 2009---OMV Gas GmbH of Austria, a 100% subsidiary of OMV Group, has again selected integrated compressor line (ICL) technology from GE Oil & Gas. Based in Vienna, OMV is Europe's leading integrated energy company covering with its operations all activities along the oil and gas value chain.

GE will supply a further three ICL units, which are designed to offer operating and environmental benefits, for an OMV gas compression facility in Baumgarten, Austria. This latest contract follows an agreement announced in July 2009, for GE to provide initial three ICL units for OMV's Neustift compression station, part of the extension of the Penta West Gas Pipeline.

"We have been pleased with the execution of the Neustift project thus far and are confident of successful results with the Baumgarten project as well," said Hermann Lang, project manager of OMV Gas GmbH. "The new emissions and noise reduction capabilities of ICL technology fit well with the requirements of both projects."

The three, six-megawatt ICL units for Baumgarten will be manufactured and tested at GE Oil & Gas' facilities in Le Creusot, France, and will be shipped to the project site by the end of 2010. They are expected to enter commercial operation by mid-2011.

"The latest project with OMV Gas is further proof of the strong industry interest in ICL technology, which is designed to help the environment," said Joe Mastrangelo, vice president-turbomachinery for GE Oil & Gas. "We're confident that the use of ICL technology will help OMV meet Austria's environmental requirements, which are likely to become increasingly stringent."

Designed to meet growing operational and environmental challenges faced by compression plant operators, GE's ICL technology features an integrated system that combines three proven technologies: centrifugal compression, active magnetic bearings and high-speed electric motors. Driven by electricity rather than gas, ICL units save energy and avoid associated CO2 emissions. The ICL is an ecomagination product of GE Oil & Gas.

Almost all external auxiliary systems have been dispensed with: ICL units operate without a gear-box, lube oil system, their external cooling system and shaft seals. Consequently, the lifetime maintenance cost is 40% lower than that of a conventional system.

Using an average eight-megawatt ICL rather than a comparable-sized gas turbine-driven compressor can reduce CO2 emissions by 60% or more. Since the use of oil for the lubrication of bearings or other parts is not required, 30,000 liters of oil is saved over the lifetime of an ICL compressor. The ICL's electrical motor also is much quieter than a conventional compressor.

The application, which is ideal for storage, fuel gas and export gas operations, and transportation pipelines, is available in a power range of up to 15 megawatts and is capable of delivering high pressure ratios and operating over a broad range of conditions.

GE's first commercial ICL unit has been tested and is under commissioning at the Etzel Gas-Lager natural gas storage facility in Germany. ICL technology has received certification as a GE ecomagination product. Ecomagination is GE's corporate-wide commitment to address the need for cleaner, more efficient sources of energy, reduced emissions and abundant sources of clean water.

The ICL is powered by Converteam's high-speed motor and drive well-proven design and technology.
