New White Light LED Technology Innovation From GELcore; Patent-Pending Phosphor Can Be Combined With Visible LED Chips To Create Highly Desired White Light LEDs VALLEY VIEW, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 6, 2002--The lighting industry is about to receive an innovation that will expand the market penetration of white light LEDs in several key segments.
Developed by GELcore and GE Global Research, a new patent-pending phosphor has been created that when combined with visible LED chips produce white light LEDs. As an alternative to the widely used YAG-based materials, this product -- with its unique intellectual property position -- will enable GELcore to create new white light LED products for several applications later this year.
By combining the YAG alternative phosphor with visible LED chips with emission between 430 and 490 nanometers, a high quality white light LED can be created. End use applications for this new LED will include backlights for LCD displays in cell phones and personal data assistants (PDAs), consumer products, as well as automotive interior lighting applications.
Phosphor technology is the key to making high quality white light LEDs, said Dan Doxsee, GELcore's Engineering Leader for White LEDs and Phosphors.
