Local MP Praises GE Money Volunteers

November 29, 2007

Watford-based employer sends team of volunteers to work with hospital employees in assessing the administration process in Dermatology. Ø As a result potentially up to two weeks could be knocked off the Dermatology administration process - reducing patient waiting times. Ø The GE 'Lean' management tool implemented to enhance the patient experience at the local community hospital. "I am delighted that colleagues from GE Money Home Lending were able to use their skills and time to help on this volunteer project in the local community. As a global employer based in Watford, it is vitally important that we use our resources and skills to help at all levels. Watford General Hospital forms a crucial part of our community and I am delighted that through implementing new techniques as advised by GE Money Home Lending, we were able to identify areas that could significantly reduce patient waiting time in the dermatology department." Colin Shave of CEO GE Money Home LendingWatford-based employer GE Money Home Lending recently completed three days volunteer work at Watford General Hospital, using GE's globally renowned 'Lean' process improvement technique to advise upon the administration of patients in Dermatology. The results are a potential two week reduction in patient waiting times. GE Money Home Lending is well known for its volunteer work in the local community, more recently at the Watford New Hope Trust, an organisation created to care for the homeless and disadvantaged in the local community. However, in a change of approach, brainpower rather than brawn was recently applied with a view to delivering real improvements to the administration support processes at Watford General Hospital. In order to improve patient waiting times within a specific department, consultants from GE Money Home Lending (along with a colleague from GE Healthcare) worked closely with the Hospital employees to examine the dermatology patient pathway. Volunteers spent time observing the current patient process and administration environment, followed by identifying current non-value added activities. By identifying the areas that were blocking an efficient patient handling process, the joint team of volunteers and Hospital employees were then able to draw up a short term and long term implementation plan that will enhance the future working of the department. Claire Ward, MP Watford, commented; "This is exactly the kind of partnership between the private and public sector that I want to see. GE Money Home Lending have used their skills and expertise to assist Watford in streamlining the administration processes and ultimately that will benefit patients and my constituents. We should be looking for more opportunities for this kind of assistance to help our public services get the best from their resources." Simon Green, Divisional Manager for Acute Medical Care said:"The event was very successful and has helped to improve the working environment in the department. This will reduce the time taken from a patient being referred to when they are treated. The trust is now looking at other ways to use "Lean" thinking and is looking forward to working with GE Healthcare on further projects."
