Press Release

GE's latest CT systems on display at Arab Health 2012 offer diagnostic accuracy, reduced dose and streamlined workflow

January 22, 2012

  • New Optima CT660 Second Edition and CT520 are next generation cardiac and radiotherapy offerings

Dubai, UAE; January 23, 2012: GE Healthcare, the healthcare business of GE (NYSE: GE) is presenting an expanded portfolio of provider and patient-friendly computed tomography (CT) systems at Arab Health 2012, being held until January 26 at the Dubai International Convention Center. These systems address increasingly varied clinical settings and offer outstanding diagnostic capabilities at optimized dose levels.

"For decades GE Healthcare has invested in leading, state of the art technology for significantly lowering dose while maintaining image performance in CT procedures," said Feras Awwad, CT Manger for the Middle East. "This innovative leadership continues as GE highlights for the region the latest developments in CT technology, including the FREEdom Edition of Discovery* CT750 HD, the new 16 slice Optima* CT520^, the enhanced 64/32 slice CT660 Second Edition, and exclusive low dose technologies like ASiR* (adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction) and Veo*+."

Optima CT660 Second Edition

Building on the global success of Optima CT660, GE Healthcare's Optima CT660 Second Edition offers further improvements in both image performance at low dose levels and enhanced workflow capabilities. Optima CT660 Second Edition incorporates two new advanced imaging technologies: Organ Dose Modulation, designed to reduce radiation dose via tube current modulation for superficial tissues like the eyes and thyroid gland, and Adaptive Enhance Level Adjustment function, which may help physicians improve visual spatial resolution, including in images of areas with high contrast or artifacts, such as bone and the inner ear, while maintaining pixel noise standard deviation.

Cardiac FREEdom

Addressing the foremost challenges in cardiac CT -- coronary motion, high heart rates, calcium blooming, plaque composition and accurate perfusion -- GE's new Discovery CT750 HD FREEdom Edition is designed to offer capabilities that could change the rules of cardiac CT. Based on exclusive FREEdom technologies (Fast Registered Energies & ECG), this system is designed to offer revolutionary innovations, including: Motion FREEdom, with intelligent motion correction via SnapShot Freeze; Calcium FREEdom, with enhanced coronary visualization using Gemstone Spectral Imaging (GSI) Cardiac; and Horizon FREE opportunities, going beyond today's clinical information with plaque material composition assessment and accurate perfusion calculations.

The Discovery CT750 HD is powered by GE's exclusive HD and low dose technologies, including GSI for lesion characterization, proven ASiR dose-optimizing technology already used on over 10 million scans at 1,000 sites across the globe, and Veo, GE's leading second generation model-based iterative reconstruction technique+.

Lower Dose by Design

GE Healthcare is committed to patient care through lower patient exposure. This commitment is evidenced by innovative technologies that redefine "low dose," novel dose-reporting solutions, unique image reconstruction techniques, and GE's new informational website (www.gehealthcare.com/ResponsibleImaging) that together help physicians provide patients unparalleled dose-conscious care.

Available on the GE Discovery CT750 HD, Optima CT660, BrightSpeed Elite, Optima CT520^ and other systems, GE exclusive ASiR technology can significantly reduce dose while maintaining diagnostic image quality+ - and can be implemented as a cost-effective upgrade for existing GE systems.

"The availability of the ASiR iterative reconstruction technique has helped us tremendously reduce our radiation dose to pediatric patients without compromising image quality," said Dr. Khalid Alyousef, Operations Administrator for the Medical Imaging Department, King Abdulaziz Medical City- Riyadh, National Guard Health Affairs.

Veo, available on GE's cutting edge Discovery CT750 HD, is the global CT industry's first Model-Based Iterative Reconstruction technology, opening the door to high image performance at previously unheard of CT low-dose levels+. Veo has sub-mSv capabilities that help deliver confident diagnosis - potentially enabling lower noise (standard deviation), improved low contrast detectability and spatial resolution, and fewer low signal artifacts.

As well, GE's new dose-tracking and reporting solution, DoseWatch*, helps healthcare facilities analyze patient exposure levels over time, which in turn can impact the quality of care provided by physicians. Supplementing existing dose awareness technologies, DoseWatch captures standardized dose information on CT, interventional, mammography and x-ray systems from a range of equipment vendors.

Optima CT520

Responding to physicians' need for a next-generation CT system that offers economic value and a reduced footprint, GE introduces the Optima CT520^. This intelligent 16-slice CT scanner sets a new standard for clinical excellence, diagnostic versatility and streamlined workflow by enabling physicians to see anatomy and lesions clearly and understand the diagnostic landscape more thoroughly at optimized dose. In fact, while achieving clinically diagnostic image quality, the Optima CT520 provides many tools to help the clinician manage dose, from Optidose* to ASiR+. Its ergonomic and environmentally-conscious design also helps impact patient comfort and energy efficiency in a variety of clinical settings. This includes an overnight "sleep" mode and electronic improvements that allow for less energy consumption both when operating and inactive.

Now in its 37th year, Arab Health is expected to host over 70,000 healthcare professionals, and will feature over 3,000 companies from around the world. Visit GE Healthcare's pavilion, which will be located in Sheikh Saeed Hall - Stand No S3B10.
