- Nolan to help provide direction and input on smart grid standards, priorities and gaps
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kevin Nolan, vice president of technology for GE Appliances, was recently appointed to a three-year term on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Smart Grid Advisory Committee (SGAC). Recognized for his leadership in bringing GE's Home Energy Management technologies to the forefront of the industry, Nolan will help provide input and direction on smart grid standards, priorities and gaps, as well as the overall status and health of U.S. smart grid implementation.
The 15-member SGAC was created to advise Director of NIST, Patrick Gallagher, as his organization carries out the smart grid requirements outlined in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.
"We will benefit greatly from the knowledge and insights of this diverse group of experts," said Gallagher. "We are grateful for their willingness to serve and to share their thinking on how NIST can maximize its technical contributions to modernizing and securing the nation's electric power grid."
The Committee's input also helps guide progress of the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP), while assisting NIST in directing research and standards activities.
"National standards will be critical as the industry moves forward with large-scale implementation of smart grid," Nolan said. "They will ensure smart technologies across the grid and within the home area network function seamlessly in a plug-and-play fashion. With the right standards in place, the installation of a home energy management device or smart appliance will be as straightforward as setting up a Bluetooth headset for your cell phone."
At GE Appliances, Nolan is responsible for helping to drive the business's growth strategy by integrating innovation into product design and by commercializing technologies through new business models and partnerships. His technology leadership has enabled GE to offer the industry's first full suite of smart grid-enabled appliances and home energy management products, marketed under the Brillion™ name, that empower consumers to make smarter, more informed energy choices.
GE's smart appliances with Brillion technology are already being tested by five utilities. Working with home energy managers, like GE's Nucleus™, these appliances receive signals from the utility smart meter and can be programmed based on consumer preferences to avoid energy usage during high-cost periods or to operate on a lower wattage when prices are highest.
In addition to Nolan's recent appointment to SGAC, he also serves on the Emerging Technologies Panel of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), which focuses on providing timely information on and analysis of emerging technologies.
Members of Nolan's staff are also engaged in setting standards for home energy management technologies that will interface with the smart grid, and they are actively involved in the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers' Smart Grid Task Force, the Utility Communications Architecture International Users Group, NIST's Smart Grid Interoperability Panel, and more.
In Nolan's 21-year GE career, he has worked in various cross-functional operating roles for GE's Appliances & Lighting and Industrial businesses. In 2006, GE Chairman Jeffrey Immelt presented Nolin with the "Heroes of Growth" award in recognition of his success in driving growth through innovation. A committed community leader, he also serves on the Board of Advisors for the University of Louisville's Speed School of Engineering and on the Executive Board of The Louisville Science Center.
Nolan graduated from the University of Connecticut with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation, he entered the prestigious GE Edison Engineering program and has been with GE ever since.
