Unique Opportunity To Work With Global Leader In Technology
Intern says, "It was an experience of a lifetime"
Dubai, August 12, 2004: General Electric (GE), the global leader in technology is using its Summer Internship Programme (SIP) to bridge the gap between university education and actual work experience in the Middle East. Since it's inception 5 years ago, GE's SIP has trained more than 30 students from the Middle East. This year, eight university students from the American University of Dubai (AUD), University of Sharjah and American University of Beirut (AUB) participated in the eight-week training programme to enhance their skills and experience GE's global network, its latest technological innovations, path-breaking R&D initiatives and international work ethics.
The SIP serves as a clear example of successful partnership between the private sector and educational institutions in the region. GE works closely with leading local universities to enable students to upgrade their skills and gain relevant work experience that will aid them in their future career growth.
Commenting on GE's work experience initiative Abdullah Taibah, Corporate Regional Executive for GE in the Middle East, said, "It gives us great pride to extend GE's heritage of corporate citizenship to the Middle East and be actively involved in the community we live and work in. Through SIP, we are offering valuable work experience in our global corporation and are allowing students to apply their knowledge to a real-life working environment."
"SIP started in 2000 as a joint partnership between GE and local educational institutions in the UAE and has been extremely successful. We at GE, value the contribution made by the summer trainees. Next year, we plan to roll this programme to reach additional GE Middle East markets such as Saudi Arabia. Plans to recruit fresh graduates to work with the company are in the pipeline. We see the internship programme as a perfect way to identify local talent in the region."
GE's summer interns, specialising in Finance, Management Information Systems and Engineering, completed diversified projects for two of GE's major businesses in the region, namely GE Energy and GE Consumer and Industrial.
Mai Muneer, an Arab student in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at AUS said of her participation in the SIP, "My experience in the work placement programme has been really rewarding. It has given me the chance to gain a better understanding of how reputable global corporations like GE operate and allowed me to be part of a great team of people. The opportunity to apply what I have learnt in my studies to a real-life working environment has been an invaluable experience in preparing me to enter my career."
GE has been active in the Gulf since 1933. Its activities in the region are conducted through direct presence, joint ventures, strategic alliances, and a wide network of distributors. GE has completed strategic projects in various hi-tech industrial sectors, defence-related contracts and major infrastructure developments.
