LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- June 19, 2012 --- (NYSE:GE) --- How many times have you wished you could tap into a little magic when preparing and cleaning up after meals? It's not the same as waving a wand, but GE's induction products may be as close to cooking with magic as you can get today. From boiling water in 101 seconds to cleaning up immediately afterwards---you'll think Harry Potter is a new member of your family.
GE, a leading innovator of induction cooking technology, continues to expand its induction cooking line with a new Profile™ model slide-in range (PHS925STSS) and an enhanced Profile freestanding range (PHB925STSS). GE also offers 30- and 36-inch induction cooktops in Profile and Monogram® brands.
How induction cooking works
With induction cooking, a current is produced when a steel or iron-bottom pan is placed on the cooktop, triggering an electromagnetic element under its smooth surface. The current passes through the cooktop, heats the pan and cooks the food inside. Nearly all the energy is transferred directly to the magnetic cookware and the food, making induction cooking quick and efficient.
Because there is no flame or coil heating element, the nonmagnetic cooking surface stays cool. No heat is transferred to any nonferrous object, such as plastic, paper, cloth, spilled food, a hand, or a pet's paw that touches the cooking area---even if the element is turned on. This creates a cooler and safer cooking environment that is easy to clean.
Technology that works like magic
GE's high-performance induction cooking surfaces can boil a quart of water in approximately 101 seconds. The precision control of induction can bring a liquid to a rapid boil, then with near instantaneous results, reduce the temperature to a steady simmer.
"Nothing else really compares to induction cooking for efficiency, speed, control or cleanability," said Julie Muennich, senior merchandising manager for GE Appliances. "Home cooks can precisely and instantaneously control the heat up and down the entire 19-setting scale on Profile models. That makes a big difference when they are simmering labor-intensive sauces, caramelizing scallops, melting chocolate, or simply searing chicken."
Induction cooking also wastes less energy through ambient heat loss. GE testing shows that about 84 percent of the energy produced by its induction elements goes directly to cooking, as compared to approximately 38 percent for gas and 73 percent for electric.
Feature-rich GE Profile models
"GE is the first appliance manufacturer to offer an induction slide-in range in the industry," adds Muennich. "We're very excited to be offering yet another induction cooking configuration -- giving consumers even more choices for their kitchen." In addition to standard induction elements, GE's new Profile model slide-in range (PHS925STSS) features:
- The large 5.3-cubic-foot PreciseAir™ convection oven that uses a fan, which continually reverses direction to provide optimal air and heat circulation for even browning and precise baking and roasting.
- A three-temperature warming zone, which keeps cooked foods fresh and ready to serve.
- Knob-free, illuminated controls that lead the user through the setting process.
- Front controls are compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
GE's slide-in chassis is easy to install and fits in most standard kitchen openings. The estimated retail price is $3,199.*
GE's freestanding range (PHB925STSS) also includes the same performance features found on the slide-in induction range. The estimated retail price is $2,899.*
