GE's India Technology Center strengthens presence in Karnataka, plans to set up new R&D labs

Announces investment of over INR 300 crores to expand research & development & engineering design in critical infrastructure areas of healthcare, energy and transportation

BANGALORE, INDIA, June 7th, 2012: GE India today announced an investment of over INR 300 crores towards setting up of new Research & Development Labs and other expansion activities at its technology center -- GE's India Technology Center - in Bangalore. GE India announced this investment on the sidelines of the Global Investors Meet, 2012 organized by the Government of Karnataka.

The new investment is focused on expanding this centre to include experimental labs and its infrastructure showcasing leading-edge research and engineering in a number of areas of critical importance including cancer treatment, radiochemistry and other technology applications in healthcare, locomotive engines, heavy earth moving equipment and equipment for the energy sector. Set up in September 2000 in Bangalore, GE's India Technology Center is GE's first and largest integrated multi-disciplinary research and development and engineering centre outside the US. Investing heavily in advanced information technology enabled laboratories, the Center leads in engineering innovation across GE's diverse businesses.

Speaking at the Global Investors Meet, John Flannery, President & CEO, GE India said, "India holds immense strategic importance in GE's overall growth plans. The new investment will further strengthen our efforts to partner the State of Karnataka and provide best in class products and localized solutions for the people of India."

Elaborating on GE's presence in the state, Dr. Gopichand Katragadda, Managing Director, GE India Technology Center said, "GE's journey in India started with Karnataka and has over time harnessed the highly talented workforce in the state and enabling regulatory environment to strengthen its research, innovation and engineering capabilities across disciplines."

GE's India Technology Center is the hub of technology and innovation for GE, playing a key role in helping it to retain its technological competitive edge and market leadership through innovation. The Center continues to add breadth and depth in key technology areas and has contributed to developing a number of innovative technologies. GE's India Technology Center consists of a team of over 4000 employees. Over the last decade, the work done by employees at the Center alone has contributed to over 1500 patents being filed by the parent General Electric Company.
