GE’s gas turbines will power the first combined heat and power plant in Kazakhstan, supporting country’s energy transition journey

  • As part of modernization of the Kazakhstan power infrastructure, Aksa Energy will build a new combined heat and power (CHP) plant to provide flexible, reliable, efficient, and sustainable heat and power for the Kyzylorda region
  • The new 240-megawatt (MW) CHP plant, expected to be commissioned in 2025, will be powered by two GE’s 6F.03 gas turbines
  • Project represents a relevant step in the country’s energy system transformation aimed at reducing coal baseload generation, supporting renewable energy balancing and eventually reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2060

KAZAKHSTAN, Kyzylorda, February 9, 2023 — GE (NYSE: GE) and Aksa Energy (AKSEN:TI), the largest publicly listed global power producer headquartered in Türkiye, announced the signature of the contract for the supply of two highly-efficient GE 6F.03 gas turbines to power Aksa Energy’s new combined heat and power plant in the Kyzylorda region of Kazakhstan. In addition, GE will provide maintenance services to help ensure long-term availability and reliable operation for the equipment.

Kazakhstan is making progress to improve grid stability and is committed to modernize its power infrastructure as part of Kazakhstan’s announced long-term objective to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.  The country’s ageing power infrastructure has been operating for an average of 40 years, and it is heavily reliant on coal-fired power generation. The new combined heat and power plant in the Kyzylorda region will help address the growing demand for reliable and flexible power, while balancing renewable energy and supporting coal phase out.

“We believe in the bright future of Kazakhstan, the rising star of the Central Asia. Aksa Energy is dedicated to support Kazakhstan’s energy transition through transforming its coal baseload to lower carbon footprint technologies in line with the country’s net-zero agenda.” said Korkut Ozturkmen, Aksa Energy Board Member and Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee. Mr. Ozturkmen stated that Aksa Energy’s 240 MW Kyzylorda heat and power plant project is a concrete example of this intention.

Korkut Ozturkmen talked about Aksa Energy’s new gas turbine supply contract with GE and said "We are delighted to announce that Aksa Energy has signed a contract with GE for the supply of two high-efficient GE 6F.03 gas turbines for our new 240 MW combined heat and power plant in Kyzylorda, which is a great achievement for the progress of the Project that we are targeting to become operational in 2025.” Mr. Ozturkmen also underlined “We chose GE’s technology based on the evaluation of multiple parameters such as CAPEX, OPEX, performance, delivery cycle, reliability, service as well as flexibility to meet grid operator requirements.”

“GE is proud to collaborate with Aksa Energy on key infrastructure projects. We value their trust in our ability to deliver our advanced technologies for the first CHP project in Kazakhstan,” said Brice Raisin, Commercial Leader, GE Gas Power in EMEA, Europe. “We believe that Aksa Energy’s global expertise in power plant commissioning and operation complemented by GE’s gas turbine technology will help meaningfully increase energy reliability and reduce emissions in the Kyzylorda region. Transitioning baseload generation fuel from carbon-intensive coal to a more efficient natural gas will help ensure grid stability as well as a better future for the people in Kazakhstan.”

GE’s 6F.03 turbines are known for their flexibility, turndown, and fuel performance. They draw on the best of GE’s scaled H and F-Class technology, offer quick installation and have a large and diversified installed base across approximately 40 countries, with more than 200 of these units in operation globally.

This contract is the latest milestone in GE’s successful, long-term collaboration in Kazakhstan. GE gas turbine technology power major oil & gas projects, including in Karachaganak, Kashagan and Tengiz regions. GE exhaust gas filtration systems reduce carbon emissions on a number of Kazakhstan energy facilities.
