GE's Continuous Emissions Monitoring System Achieves European Certification

October 15, 2003

Spain facility receives first CE certified CEMS and multi-lingual DAHS

ATLANTA, GEORGIA (October 15, 2003) --- Expanding its presence in Europe, GE Power Systems has announced its Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) is now CE certified (Conformité Européènne). All products sold in European Union (EU) countries require CE certification.
Obtaining CE certification was an extensive process that required evaluation of all system components to ensure compliance with proper EU directives and standards. To become CEcertified, a manufacturer or exporter must prepare a technical (construction) file with evidence of compliance to the applicable directive(s) and standards. The European Commission refers to the CE marking of products as a "passport" which can allow a manufacturer to freely circulate its products within the European marketplace.
"We are aggressively pursuing opportunities for our CEM systems in the European market and CE certification was the first step in facilitating this expansion," said Stephen Rowe, general manager, Environmental Energy. "With our proven technology and extensive industry experience, GE is prepared to assist European facilities in obtaining compliance with current and future EU environmental directives and help the EU with its continued efforts in reducing pollutants."
GE Powers Systems' first CEMS installation in the EU is scheduled for early 2004 at Iberdrola Santurtzi, located in the municipality of Santurtzi, Spain. In addition, four of GE's KVB-Enertec CEMS will be installed in mid-2004 in Iberdrola's Arcos facility in Spain. The Spanish facility will also utilize GE's KVB-Enertec multi-lingual Data Acquisition and Handling System (DAHS) to help maximize process and operating efficiencies.
"Our CEMS and DAHS systems are unparalleled in the U.S. emissions monitoring industry, and with only minor component reconfigurations to meet the EU certification requirements, our systems provide the same highly accurate and reliable performance for the EU industry," added Mr. Rowe.
GE Power Systems (GEPS) is also providing CEMS start-up and installation services, which ensure the CEMS and DAHS units are fully operational in a timely and efficient manner. GEPS plans to make available in the EU its full-service package --- a comprehensive offering designed for customers who want to ensure availability and data accuracy. With the full-service offering, GE's Environmental Energy team assumes management for the facility's CEMS program, including comprehensive hardware and software operation and maintenance, data collection, database management and reporting tasks.
GE Power Systems' Environmental Energy group is currently accepting orders for its CE certified CEMS and multi-lingual DAHS in the EU.
