GE's 6FA Technology to Play a Major Role in the Modernization of Russia's Energy Infrastructure

March 17, 2011

New Combined-Cycle Plant to Deliver Reliable Power for City of Berezniki

MOSCOW--17 March 2011-- Russian power generation company TGK-9, an affiliate of Integrated Energy Systems (IES) , has selected advanced gas turbine technology from GE (NYSE: GE) for a combined-cycle plant that will supply heat and electricity for the residents of Berezniki, an industrial city in Russia's Urals Federal District. The project supports the Russian government's initiative to continue to modernize its energy infrastructure and to meet the country's growing power needs.

GE will supply two Frame 6FA gas turbine and associated generators plus technical assistance, on-site training and performance testing for the combined-cycle project, which is expected to produce 220 megawatts of new power for the region. The electricity will be distributed under an agreement between the Russian Ministry of Energy and IES, Russia's largest private power supply and gas distribution company.

"When selecting equipment for the implementation of investment projects, IES gives priority to hi-tech facilities with high efficiency. GE gas turbines are used for three of IES' power stations and we believe they will provide long-term reliability and high performance," said Andrey Wagner, first vice president and chief operating officer of IES.

GE's 6FA gas turbines are designed to deliver advanced performance in midrange combined-cycle power plants as well as industrial and cogeneration applications. More than 100 units are installed globally and with more than 3 million hours of service, the 6FA is one of the most qualified gas turbines in its class.

"We are delighted that our 6FA gas turbine technology has been selected for this project. It underlines the value our technology delivers to customers whose focus is on meeting their commercial and operational objectives as they implement government initiatives for energy efficiency and the modernization of the electricity sector," said Rod Christie, president of GE Energy Central and Eastern Europe, Russia & CIS. "GE is continually strengthening its in-country operations. Projects like this enable us to proceed with much greater speed."

GE has been operating in Russia since the early 20th century and today has 2,500 employees in the country. The company is represented across the country in multiple industries: healthcare, transportation, aviation, electric power, oil and gas, water treatment, financial services, media, appliances, lighting and intelligent platforms.
