Press Release

General Electric and partners to establish a Diagnostic Services Nexus to develop Malaysia's healthcare industry

March 07, 2011

General Electric (GE) announces participation in an entry-point project to establish a Diagnostic Services Nexus under the Economic Transformation Programme.

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA -- March 8, 2011 - GE (NYSE: GE) announced today the company's commitment to establish a Diagnostic Services Nexus (DSN) under the Healthcare National Key Economic Area (NKEA) of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP). The announcement forms part of GE's `company-to-country strategy' to support the government's effort to transform Malaysia into a high-income nation by 2020.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at a press conference today, for which Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) CEO Datuk Seri Idris Jala was present. Also in attendance were CEO of GE ASEAN, Stuart Dean; and Asia-Pacific President & CEO of GE Healthcare, Akihiko Kumagai.

Says Stuart Dean, "Malaysia's ETP is a great model of how the public and private sectors can work together to develop the nation and increase the gross national income whilst creating more jobs. GE is excited by the many business opportunities that the ETP offers under the various NKEAs and looks forward to becoming a key partner towards achieving the nation's goals."

Healthcare in Malaysia is a dynamic and rapidly growing industry and currently contributes to RM15 billion in gross national income. Under the ETP, the government aims to develop the industry by migrating to a more comprehensive product, services and asset strategy. Tapping into this opportunity, GE, in cooperation with local partners, is investing its technology and expertise to develop the DSN.

By linking public and private sector radiologists in Malaysia on a teleradiology grid, the DSN will serve to redistribute reporting workload in the country and build capacity which will in turn, generate gross national income by in-sourcing teleradiology services from overseas. The project is expected to have a gross national income contribution of RM540 million and create 1500 jobs by 2020.

Says Akihiko Kumagai, "Consistent with our company's healthymagination initiative, GE is committed to improving the quality, increasing access and lowering the cost of healthcare in Malaysia. We are proud to be able to utilize our expertise in healthcare information technologies to deliver better healthcare to Malaysians through the Diagnostic Services Nexus."

The DSN will feature products from GE's advanced healthcare IT solutions line to handle the demands of high volume radiology departments, large stand-alone hospitals and entire hospital networks. GE's Picture Archiving and Communication (PACS) Solution provides a flexible and efficient approach to storing and managing diagnostics images, and is installed in many tertiary hospital Information Systems in Malaysia. GE's Healthcare IT solutions are widely used around the world.

The DSN is a further testament to GE's commitment to advance healthcare in the Malaysia, where GE is already a major player in the industry with partnerships with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education, as well as private healthcare facilities, academic and research centers.
