November 09, 2006

Tata Chemicals Awards US$6.5 million project on a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) basis

New Delhi, November 9, 2006 - GE Water & Process Technologies, a unit of GE Infrastructure, today announced that it has won its first sea water desalination plant project in India from Tata Chemicals Ltd. The contract is valued at US $6.5 million. GE Water and Process Technologies will provide Tata Chemicals a Mobile Sea Water Desalination plant for 4 yrs of operation on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis.

By supplying 5.8 Million Litres /Day of Industrial water and reducing energy and overall costs, the build-own-operate project will lessen water scarcity issues presently facing Tata Chemicals. GE's latest desalination technology is capable of producing up to 3,00,000 m3/day of high quality potable water while also helping to minimize water shortages.

A world leader in water, water reuse, wastewater treatment and process solutions, GE Water & Process Technologies offers the broadest portfolio of water and process technologies. Its ecomagination technologies and solutions are at the forefront of helping customers solve water quality and water scarcity demands.

Mr. R Mukundan, COO, Chemicals Business, Tata Chemicals Limited said "The environment has always been of special concern to Tata Chemicals. We are deeply committed to using innovative technologies to help improve the quality of life of the local community without adversely affecting the environment. We are very pleased that in GE Water & Process Technologies, we have an able partner who is a global leader in their field and shares our passion for sustainable solutions."

H Bala, Country Manager, GE Water & Process Technologies, India said, "We are delighted to have won the order from Tata Chemicals to install the first ever desalination plant in India. GE Water & Process Technologies has a clear mission -- to provide our industrial, commercial and municipal customers with safe, reliable and sustainable fresh water solutions at the lowest total cost of ownership and quickest deployment. GE has over four decades of experience in designing, installing and operating water supply management solutions. We provide desalination solutions for both brackish water and seawater -- solutions that range from standard equipment suitable for light commercial or large residential applications as well as mobile solutions for temporary requirements."

GE is one of the largest suppliers of desalination plants in the world. GE's installed desalination platforms reclaim more than 2 billion gallons a day of water for a variety of purposes. That amount is equal to the daily water required by more than 150 million people. GE is a leader in membrane-based desalination technology, one of the most energy-efficient technologies for transforming seawater and brackish water into fresh water for drinking, irrigation and industrial applications.

GE's reverse osmosis (RO) and electrodialysis reversal (EDR) technologies produce water reliably and affordably. Reverse osmosis desalination plants require substantially less energy than do thermal desalination processes such as multi-stage flash, making them substantially more cost-effective. They are also versatile - accommodating a range of sizes, across continents, for almost any salt or brackish water source. Reverse osmosis desalination plants can require up to 25 percent less land area than competing desalination platforms, making them easier to site.

GE Water and Process Technologies' business in India has grown by over 36% from US$ 11 million in 2005 to $15 million in 2006, and expects to exceed US$ 300 million by 2010. GE has invested US$ 5 million at the John F Welch Technology Centre in Bangalore and plans to invest US$ 100 million in BOO projects and other local infrastructure.

GE Infrastructure, Water & Process Technologies, a unit of General Electric Company, is an industry leader in solving the world's most pressing water reuse, industrial, irrigation, municipal, and drinking water needs. Through desalination, advanced membrane, separation solutions, and water reuse and wastewater management and process technologies, GE delivers added value to its customers. By improving performance and product quality, reducing operating costs, and extending equipment life through a broad range of products and services that are designed to optimize total performance; protect customers' assets; prevent fouling and scaling; and safeguard the environment through water conservation and energy reduction.
