GE Transportation Named "outstanding Philanthropic Organization"

Recognition Given As Part Of 2004 National Philanthropy Day Awards

ERIE, Pa. (November 16, 2004) -- GE Transportation was recognized recently as Northwest Pennsylvania's "Outstanding Philanthropic Organization" for 2004. Charlene Begley, President and CEO of GE's rail business, accepted the award on behalf of the business' employees.

"GE employees, the Employees' Community Service Fund and GE Elfun Volunteers are the backbone of our community initiatives," explained Begley. "I am extremely proud of our employees. They bring their energy, passion, financial contributions and volunteer hours to so many worthy causes in Northwestern Pennsylvania."

The Outstanding Philanthropic Organization Award is one of four awards presented annually by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The United Way of Erie County nominated GE Transportation. Awards were also presented for Outstanding Young Philanthropist, Outstanding Philanthropist and Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser.

"GE Transportation and its employees have an exemplary record of philanthropic involvement that includes a wide array of causes with emphasis on children, education, essential social services and the environment," wrote R.J. Zonna, VicePresident of Campaign & Communications, United Way of Erie County in his nomination letter. "GE employees, the Employees Community Service Fund (CSF) and GE Elfun volunteers have consistently motivated others to get involved by organizing their own events to benefit the community."

GE Transportation, its employees, retirees, and Elfuns have an impressive record of service in Northwest Pennsylvania, volunteering 40,000 hours of community serviceeach year. The business and its employees have invested over $10.6 million in the United Way's Erie campaign during the last decade. Last year, the investment of GE Transportation and its employees accounted for 20% of United Way's entire $5.3 million annual campaign.
