GE, TEMPO Institute and Garuda Indonesia Develop Future Leaders Through The "Menjadi Indonesia" Program

Jakarta, December 5th, 2012 -- General Electric (GE), TEMPO Institute and Garuda Indonesia launched Letters To and From Leaders, a book dedicated to the future leaders of Indonesia, and presented awards to the winners of an essay competition for students through the Menjadi Indonesia 2012 program.

Handry Satriago, CEO GE Indonesia; Emirsyah Satar, President Director Garuda Indonesia; Mardiyah Chamim, TEMPO Institute; Dahlan Iskan, Minister of State Owned Enterprises; and Joko Widodo, Governor of Jakarta; witnessed the book launch and awards presentation.

Menjadi Indonesia 2012 is an annual program of the TEMPO Institute organized to help develop competitive and competent future leaders. More than 600 students across the country and overseas took part in the competition.

University students are encouraged to be more sensitive to the problems in their communities, propose solutions, and present them in writing. From a total of 645 essays submitted, 30 finalists were shortlisted. The finalists were then eligible to participate in the Leadership Camp, which provided training in leadership skills and journalism. There were also opportunities for them to engage with current prominent leaders in the country.

"The success of a nation greatly depends on the quality of its human resources and it is important that we focus on the development of our young leaders. Menjadi Indonesia is our contribution to this area. We hope that we can support this program annually," said Mardiyah Chamim of the TEMPO Institute.

This year's Menjadi Indonesia program also launched the Letters To and From Leaders, which will be a new component moving forward to this program. The book is a compilation of letters from 95 Indonesian leaders ranging from artists, athletes, CEOs and government officials. The leaders shared their lessons and experiences in achieving success and overcoming the obstacles and challenges in their lives.

Prominent figures in the book include Budiono, the Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia; Dahlan Iskan, the Minister of State Owned Enterprises; Gita Wirjawan, Trade Minister; Joko Widodo, Governor of Jakarta; Basuki Purnama, Vice Governor of Jakarta; Emil Salim; Ignasius Jonan; Bondan Winarno; Riri Riza; Susi Susanti; Sri Mulyani Indrawati; Obin; Erna Witoelar; Arifin Panigoro; Christine Hakim; Busyro Muqoddas; Tisna Sanjaya; and many more.

"It is important to start early in developing leadership skills and preparing competent future leaders that can compete globally. Therefore, Garuda Indonesia fully supports this program together with GE and TEMPO Institute. We hope Menjadi Indonesia program can help discover competitive, intelligent and confident future leaders," said Emirsyah Satar, President Director Garuda Indonesia.

"Developing strong and innovative future leaders who can compete globally is central to Indonesia's future," said Handry Satriago, CEO GE Indonesia. "Menjadi Indonesia is a positive avenue to select future leaders who are innovative and confident in expressing their opinions and ideas. This is the second year that we are supporting this program."

The winners of the students essay competition are: Gigay Citta Acikgenc from University of Indonesia as a winner; Robbi Irfani Maqoma from University of Indonesia as runner up; and Sabhrina Gita Aninta from Bandung Institute of Technology as third winner. The three winners received awards and certificates from TEMPO Institute, GE and Garuda Indonesia. Cash prizes totaled Rp. 33 million.

Some of the letters read out during the awards night included "Moving from the heart" by Ayu Bulantrisna Jelantik, Balinese Dance Maestro; "The future leaders" by Joko Widodo, Governor of Jakarta; "Becoming Indonesia" by Gunawan Mohammad, poet and writer; "Good is not good when better is expected" by Emirsyah Satar, President Director of PT Garuda Indonesia and "To future leaders" by Handry Satriago, CEO GE Indonesia.

In addition, the read out also included one of the students' essays: "If I were Indonesia's Minister of Education," written by Gigay Citta Acikgenc, one of the finalists of the essay competition from Yogyakarta.

"I'm very proud to be part of the Menjadi Indonesia 2012. This program gave me the opportunity to express my visions for Indonesia, exchange ideas with other students from across Indonesia, and learn from a few inspirational figures," said Gigay Citta Acikgenc from University of Indonesia as a winner of Menjadi Indonesia 2012 essay competition. "This is truly a valuable experience."
