GE in Technology Transfer Agreement with TNB REMACO

December 12, 2012

  • GE works closely with TNB to cater to Malaysia's power needs
  • Agreement reaffirms long-standing relationship between GE and TNB REMACO
  • Agreement is aligned with Government efforts to up-skill Malaysian talent

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA---December 13, 2012--- General Electric (GE) through its company, GE Infrastructure Technology Inc, and TNB Repair and Maintenance (TNB REMACO), a subsidiary of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), signed today a Technology Transfer Agreement for GE to transfer repair technology to support the TNB REMACO Repair Center in Klang, Selangor.

The transfer of technology will be carried out with the highest of standards set by GE's certification for Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) repairs on GE gas turbines. Under the agreement, the Center will have the latest repair processes and technologies to upgrade GE gas turbine to meet market demand.

GE will transfer 24,000 operating hour repair technology for Combustion Liner and Transition Piece components that include Renewalloy, Honeycomb, Slurry Coating and EDM Stem Drilling. The technology will enable customers to install refurbished hot gas path parts that require an extended inspection interval instead of the standard 8,000 operating hours.

Dr Kenji Uenishi, President, GE Power & Water, Asia Region said, "GE's relationship with TNB dates back to 1984 when we first provided the national utility with GE's gas turbine technology for the country's first combined cycle power plant. Today's signing marks the extension of an agreement that was first inked with TNB REMACO in 1995 and reaffirms our commitment to support and innovate through new and more efficient technologies to ensure the highest quality standards of repair capabilities and optimized operating costs."

GE and TNB REMACO signed a Technology Transfer Agreement in 1995 for the transfer of repair technology for components of GE's Frame 5, Frame 6B and Frame 9E gas turbines. Under the agreement, GE provided technical support, training and consultation. GE's support was instrumental in helping TNB REMACO establish their first repair and maintenance center in Malaysia.

TNB President / Chief Executive Officer, Dato' Wira Ir. Azman Mohd said, "The collaboration of GE technical know-how and expertise in Gas Turbines and TNB REMACO's highly competent workforce is a strategic partnership that has achieved great value over the years."

"This relationship has helped TNB REMACO to sustain Malaysia's power generation capabilities to fulfill the country's energy needs," stressed Ir. Azman.

Describing the recently conferred The Best Power Plant Service Provider title by the 2012 Frost & Sullivan Malaysia Excellence Awards as another milestone for TNB REMACO, he said today's agreement will further augment TNB REMACO's reputation as a one stop service provider for power related works.

"It will also position TNB REMACO's Repair Center as a regional repair hub, in line with TNB's aim to be a global brand;" Ir. Azman added.

According to the renewed agreement, GE will also provide technical assistance, consultation, training and sharing of information to assist TNB REMACO to up-skill talent and implement applicable standard operating procedures and quality assurance programs, as certified and approved by GE. This will qualify TNB REMACO's Repair Center to be certified as a GE authorized repair facility in Malaysia for combustion and hot gas path stationary parts of GE Model PG6001B Gas Turbines.

The agreement is timely given TNB REMACO's plans to go regional in repair and maintenance capabilities to support power plant service providers. GE provides technology upgrades and plant optimization measures to help increase total plant output and efficiency at TNB power plants. Going forward, GE will also assist in generator overhaul, and parts supply for operation and maintenance to help increase shop repair volume.

In 2011, GE signed a multi-year agreement with TNB to provide maintenance services for the Tuanku Ja'afar PD 2 combined-cycle power station at Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan.
