- GE and Shanghai New Energy Celebrate Commissioning of New Combined Cooling, Heat and Power Plant
- Project Represents China’s Largest Gas Engine-Based CCHP Plant
- GE’s Jenbacher Cogeneration Technology to Power New Plant
BEIJING-November 17, 2014-GE Power & Water’s Distributed Power business (NYSE: GE) and Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone New Energy Co., Ltd (Shanghai New Energy) celebrated the commissioning of the largest gas engine-based combined cooling, heat and power (CCHP) plant in China. Located in Shanghai’s International Tourism and Resorts Zone, in the center of East Shanghai, the new plant is powered by GE’s ecomagination qualified Jenbacher gas engine technology.
The CCHP plant was built and is operated on the resort site by Shanghai New Energy. It has a total installed capacity of 35-megawatts (MW). Each year, the plant is estimated to produce approximately 170 million kWh of electricity while achieving CO2 emissions reduction of up to 75,000 tons.
“To echo the National Energy Administration’s call for distributed power development, we are following the low carbon and energy saving planning concept to build the Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone, a demonstration project of the low carbon park. GE’s CCHP technology will be a huge driver to make it happen,” said Guangzhao Huo, general manager of Shanghai New Energy.
The CCHP plant includes five of GE’s 4.4-MW J624 two-stage turbocharged Jenbacher units, cogenerating heating, cooling, electricity and compressed air for the Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone and offering a total energy efficiency of up to 80 percent to improve the zone’s efficiency and environmentally friendlier operations. The plant’s electricity also will support the regional grid.
“With a need for cleaner energy in an environment of higher fuel prices, GE’s Jenbacher cogeneration technology will offer more efficient power and fewer emissions for a greener Shanghai International Tourism and Resorts Zone,” said Paul Corkery, president & CEO of GE Distributed Power Asia.
As an ecomagination qualified product within GE’s gas engines platform, the J624 is among the world’s most flexible solutions for power generation. Ecomagination is GE’s commitment to build innovative answers to today’s environmental challenges while driving economic growth. The process to obtain ecomagination qualification requires rigorous efforts to drive greater product efficiency and improve environmental performance for the customer while using fewer resources.
