GE to Supply Power Recovery System for Valero's Paulsboro Refinery

September 21, 2004

HOUSTON, TEXAS (September 21, 2004) --- A power recovery system that GE Energy is supplying for Valero Energy Corp.'s (NYSE:VLO) refinery in Paulsboro, New Jersey will have the capacity to generate 18 megawatts of electricity to help support operations, GE reported today at the 33rd Turbomachinery Symposium.
Through its oil and gas business, GE received a multi-million dollar contract to supply the equipment, which will be shipped in the fourth quarter of 2005 and installed during the second quarter of 2006, when it will begin operation.
The power recovery system features a Conmec FEX-107HT hot-gas expander, which will recover energy from the exhaust of the catalyst regenerator in the fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCCU) at Valero's Paulsboro facility.
The high-technology hot gas expander has been refined to operate in an extreme environment of 1400° F for five years to match refinery turnaround schedules. For this project, a new expander size will maximize the power recovery from Valero's large-scale FCCU.
In addition to the hot gas expander, GE is supplying a gearbox, an 18-megawatt synchronous generator, couplings and guards, base plate and packaging, third- and fourth- stage separators, a power control room, isolation and control valves, piping, structural work, foundations, installation and tie-ins. GE also will provide project management assistance.
Other major participants in the project include Matrix Service Industrial Contractors of Eddystone, Pennsylvania, the installation contractor.
This will be the first GE installation of a new power recovery system in a Valero facility. GE's oil and gas division previously has supplied Valero with other equipment, including three new hot gas expanders.
