GE to Supply Equipment, Services for New Hydropower Plant in Central Turkey

May 29, 2003

OSLO, NORWAY (May 29, 2003) --- General Electric has received a contract of US$17.9 million to supply hydro turbines, generators, and additional equipment and services for the Yamula Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant in the Kayseri Province of central Turkey. When it enters service in mid-2005, the new hydro plant will produce 100 megawatts of power at full load.
The owner and operator of the Yamula facility will be Kayseri Elektrik Uretim Sanayi ve Ticaret of Ankara, Turkey, owned by Ayen Energy which operates the 9.6-megawatt Kisik and 84-megawatt Camlica hydro power stations in Turkey.
Civil construction of the Yamula plant began in 2000 and is currently 40% complete. The new facility will help to meet the increasing demand for power in Turkey, which is estimated to grow by 5-10% annually over the next ten years.
GE business units included in the contract are GE Energy Norway AS of Oslo and General Elektrik Ticaret ve Servis, a GE company based in Istanbul. GE Canada will be responsible for supplying the generators. GE Hydro, in association with GE Capital, arranged export credit financing through the Export Agency of Norway.
The scope of GE Hydro's contract includes the design, supply and erection of the electrical/mechanical equipment including two vertical Francis turbine-generators rated at 50 megawatts each, main inlet valves, a governor system, cooling water and drainage systems, main transformers, switchyard equipment and services. ABB will supply electrical balance-of-plant components.
The equipment will be manufactured at GE Hydro facilities in Norway, Canada and Brazil and will be shipped to the project site in the second quarter of 2004 with the installation and commissioning to be completed in mid-2005.
Won in competitive bidding, the Yamula project marks GE's first hydropower contract with Kayseri Elektrik.
GE Hydro, a unit of GE Power Systems, is a world leader in the supply of hydro turbines, generators and related electro-technical equipment for the hydropower production industry. Capabilities include complete water-to-wire solutions for new hydroelectric plants and refurbishment and service for existing plants.
