GE Silicones Introduces Self-Lubricating Liquid Fluorosilicone Elastomer To U.S. Auto Market; New technology provides critical productivity and performance benefits

October 23, 2002

WATERFORD, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 2002--GE Silicones announces the introduction of the Company's newest innovation in automotive gasketing and sealing materials for the Americas market, FSL7586/40 liquid self-lubricating fluorosilicone elastomer.

Designed for use in gasketing and sealing applications both under-hood and on the automotive powertrain, FSL7586/40 elastomer can provide improved resistance to both lubricants and fuels, and it is characterized by a low compression set without need for post-cure operations.

"FSL7586/40 elastomer is groundbreaking liquid fluorosilicone technology," notes Graham Glander, Elastomers Program Manager for GE Silicones. "This product offers critical productivity benefits, occupies an important performance niche in critical automotive applications, and comes to the Americas with a successful application history in Europe through GE Bayer Silicones."

FSL7586/40 self-lubricating fluorosilicone elastomer provides reduced insertion force for either manual or automated manufacturing processes. High curing speed and easy de-molding permit fully automated production of large numbers of articles in short cycle times. FSL7586/40 elastomer is designed for use in applications such as fuel seals, O-rings, connector grommets and seals, and throttle valve gaskets.

FSL7586/40 is a two-component fluorosilicone elastomer that, when blended together, can achieve the following key performance properties: 40 Shore A Hardness, Tensile Strength of 725 psi (5 N/mm(2)), Tear Strength of 114 ppi (ASTM D624 B / 20 N/mm), and Compression Set of 17 (22 hours / 175C).

FSL7586/40 elastomer offers balanced fluid-and solvent-resistant properties, with demonstrated resistance to: ASTM Oil No. 1, IRM903, Test Fuel C, Aral Diesel, RME, and various other motor oils. The product is translucent and easily colorable, enabling simpler finished parts identification and quality testing.

GE Silicones, an operating division of GE Specialty Materials, is a global manufacturer of silicone products with world headquarters in Waterford, NY. It has 3,500 employees and manufactures over 4,000 products for the automotive, aviation, consumer, electronics, healthcare and personal care industries.
