GE Showcases Its Advanced Technologies for the Clean Energy Era at World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi

January 14, 2012

  • GE Committed to Energy Leadership for UAE and the Region
  • Featuring One of the Power Industry's Broadest Portfolio of Products and Services
  • Decades of Experience Delivering Advanced Technology Solutions to the Country's Growing Energy Infrastructure

ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES; January 15, 2012: The Middle East, a region of dynamic growth, continues to face strong demand for cleaner, efficient and sustainable energy production. To help the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other nations across the region and throughout the world meet their energy goals, GE (NYSE: GE) will showcase its latest technology and service solutions at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) Jan. 16-19 in Abu Dhabi.

Held under the patronage of HH General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the U.A.E. Armed Forces and hosted by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (MASDAR), the theme at this year's WFES is "Powering Sustainable Innovation."

"The world today requires innovative solutions to drive sustainable development, with a focus on energy and water use efficiency," said Joseph Anis, GE Energy's president and CEO for the Middle East. "We all need to work together in the Middle East and around the globe, from individuals to large corporations, toward new solutions that can produce tangible results for a better world."

Noting that GE has participated in WFES each year since it was launched in 2008, Anis said, "We view this event as an excellent forum to better understand from our customers their energy needs and to share with them how advanced technology is designed to enable them to achieve their strategic goals," he said. "We are committed to helping Abu Dhabi meet its mandate to generate 7 percent of its energy from renewable sources by 2020."

At WFES 2012, GE will highlight advanced power, water re-use and oil and gas technologies, including GE solutions for modernizing the grid to meet our growing capacity, sustainability, economic and security needs.

Steve Bolze, president and CEO, GE Power & Water, will participate in a panel discussion, "Business Leaders in Future Energy -- Insights from the Executive Suite," on January 17 at 9.45am, sharing his insights on sustainable energy solutions. Additionally, Frank Ackland, regional general manager, Digital Energy, GE Energy, will be a member of the panel "Energy Efficiency: The Key to Carbon Reduction" on January 17, at 1:45pm. He will discuss smart grid and its role in renewable integration in order to reduce carbon emission.

Under the banner "Powering a Sustainable Future," GE's booth 5320 also supports this year's WFES theme with GE technical experts on hand to showcase its technology including:

  • Innovative and fuel flexible energy technologies that offer enhanced operational flexibility and efficiency including GE Energy's FlexEfficiency technology, which integrates renewables with natural gas to produce cleaner, more affordable and reliable power, its newest aeroderivative gas turbine, the LM 6000-PH, and Jenbacher biogas engines. Other energy technology solutions includes the ecomagination-certified ZeeWeed module for water reuse as well as MyFleetTM Plant Performance Monitor, empowering thermal power-generating plant owners and operators to make more informed decisions and identifying opportunities for operating efficiency gains.
  • GE recently launched innovative filter house technology, which is specifically designed to eliminate gas turbine shut downs for offline axial compressor water washes. This technology is among the innovative solutions GE offers to the oil and gas sector, such as its ecomagination-certified carbon capture sequence.
  • GE's WattStation and DuraStation charger for Electric Vehicles and Smart Meter technology which support efforts towards reducing the carbon footprint of the automotive industry and for the efficient transmission and consumption of electricity.
  • In the renewable energy arena, GE features wind turbines ranging from 1.5 to 4.1 megawatts, designed for high efficiency in all wind conditions and offering advanced technology grid integration features. GE also offers leading-edge solar power technology including thin film solar panels with the highest independently measured and reported efficiency in the industry. Crucial localization initiatives with some of the Middle East's leading energy and engineering services companies to complement GE's extensive local and international engineering and service facilities.
  • GE's advanced dry low NOx (DLN) technology, which enables the lowering of gas turbine emissions during operations. Recently, GE signed an agreement with Qatargas, the largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) producer in the world, to supply the DLN technology to reduce gas turbine emissions at the company's facility. This agreement builds upon GE's agreement with RasGas Company Limited (RasGas), another LNG producer in Qatar where GE also is supplying DLN technology to the company's facility in Ras Laffan, to help RasGas meet the country's emissions levels of 9 ppm[1].

With its global resources and experience, as well as its long and successful regional heritage, GE is well positioned to understand and respond to the cleaner technology and efficiency needs of the Middle East.

GE Energy is a regional leader in power generation, with more than 1,000 turbines installed throughout the Middle East and more than US$8 billion in power generation projects announced in the past five years.
