Spotlight on GE's ecomagination initiative to build innovative solutions to address today's environmental challenges
Abu Dhabi, UAE; January 15, 2013: GE (NYSE: GE) is supporting the sustainable development initiatives of the Middle East region with a showcase of its advanced concentrated solar panels and Jenbacher gas engines, among other green technologies, at the World Future Energy Summit 2013, to be held from January 15 to 17, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center.
Putting the spotlight on its ecomagination initiative to build innovative solutions addressing today's environmental challenges while driving economic growth, GE is underlining its technological competencies in providing clean and sustainable solutions, especially for the power and water sector, at the exhibition.
GE's technologies complement the goals of the regional governments, including the UAE, to diversify their energy sources, promote advanced energy-efficient solutions, wastewater treatment and desalination, and minimise the overall carbon footprint. GE's concentrated solar panel and Jenbacher landfill gas engines are both cost-effective, high output and sustainable solutions that meet the requirements of the region.
Nabil Habayeb, President & CEO, GE Middle East, North Africa & Turkey, said: "With over 80 years of partnership, especially in the key sectors of energy, power, water, aviation and healthcare, GE understand the growth aspirations of the region. Today, there is a stronger focus on promoting clean, renewable and sustainable solutions that reduce the region's dependency on traditional energy sources. With demand for power and water growing in line with the increase in population and the ongoing infrastructure development, it is important to develop localized solutions that strengthen energy and water use efficiency."
He added: "Ecomagination is our approach to create a cleaner future for the region, and we are showcasing our newest green technologies at World Future Energy Summit, especially the concentrated solar panels and our Jenbacher gas engines that can efficiently harness alternative sources for energy. We continuously invest in new technologies in the energy and water sector to meet the requirements of the region. Energy and water are precious resources and by providing cleaner solutions, GE is reiterating its commitment as a true partner in the progress of the region."
A worldwide leader in exploring renewable energy sources, GE's solutions complement the current development thrust of the region. Most recently, GE supplied one of its Jenbacher landfill gas engines for a landmark project by the Dubai Municipality to convert waste to energy, with the potential of generating 1 MW of power and reducing the adverse impact of greenhouse gases on the environment.
GE's Gas Engines business, with its Jenbacher gas engines, is a recognized leader in the industry for fuel flexibility, low emissions and performance excellence with energy solutions providing efficiencies as high as 98 percent. With more than 25 years of experience in the combustion of landfill gas - and more than 1,400 landfill gas systems with a total electricity output of about 1,400 MW delivered throughout the world -- GE's Jenbacher gas engines range in power from 0.25 to 4.4 MW and run on either natural gas or a variety of other gases including biogas, landfill gas, coal mine gas, sewage gas, combustible industrial waste gases. A broad range of commercial, industrial, and municipal customers use Jenbacher products for on-site generation of power, heat, and cooling.
Over the past years, GE's ecomagination portfolio has also gained strong application in the region, including through a pilot program with Masdar City to investigate the reduction of peak power demand by using smart home appliances involving some of the first residents of Masdar City.
Among GE's ecomagination certified products is the GEnx aircraft engine, which has a 15 percent lower fuelburn during cruise than the platform it replaces. GE Aviation's advanced GE90-115B and GEnx jet engines have found wide acceptance by Emirates, Etihad, Air Arabia, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, Jazeera Airways, Oman Air and Saudi Arabian.
GE Power & Water's desalination and advanced membranes transform more than two billion gallons of water daily into fresh, usable water, including over 800 million liters of water per day in the Middle East and Africa. The company's ecomagination certified ZeeWeed membrane bioreactor system helps conserve and reuse wastewater, save energy and reduce environmental impacts.
As of 2011, GE's ecomagination initiative has achieved more than US$105 billion in sales and services since its launch in 2005. In 2011, GE generated US$21 billion in revenues from ecomagination products and services and invested more than US$2 billion in research and development, continuing progress toward the company's goal of a US$10 billion cumulative investment from 2010 to 2015.
GE's green technologies and solutions are showcased at its stand 6000 at WFES 2013. The world's foremost annual meeting for policy, business and technology leaders from the renewable energy and clean technologies industries, WFES is billed to be attended by world leaders in policy from over 70 nations as well as energy experts presenting the latest trends in the industry today.
