GE Says Middle East Is Important to Company's Sustained Growth; Global Major Currently Does Business Worth $1.6 Billion: Sees Exciting Prospects in Energy Sector

November 19, 2002

Dubai, November 19, 2002 ---- General Electric considers the Middle East market a key contributor to its sustained growth and sees several exciting growth opportunities especially in the energy sector. The global major, whose volume of business in the Middle East is currently US$1.6 billion, operates across the region with full-fledged offices in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

This was stated by Ferdinando 'Nani' Beccalli, the newly appointed President and CEO of GE's operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa, during his first visit to Dubai in the UAE recently. During his visit, he held high-level meetings with HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defence Minister and Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Emirates and President of the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation.

Beccalli's agenda during his visit focused on relationship building with GE customers and the GE businesses operating in the Gulf region. At a high-profile event attended by over 70 guests including the U.S.A and Italian Ambassadors to the UAE, Beccalli had the opportunity to meet many of GE's major customers in the region.

"My meetings with customers and businesses have been successful and especially valuable was the feedback I received. This will help us sharpen our strategies for the region, while enhancing our customer and government relations," Beccalli continued.

He said GE's strength lies in the company's integrity and good governance which helps build undying trust with its investors. "The company is in great financial shape despite a global slowdown because we continue to focus on core products and services," added Beccalli.

Abdullah Taibah, Corporate Regional Executive, GE Middle East, said the visit has enhanced GE's relationship with its existing and potential customers. "Mr. Beccalli's visit is of tremendous value to us as it has helped build a strong relationship with our clients and potential customers. He was able to see first-hand the calibre and scope of our businesses in this region," said Taibah.

GE has been active in the Gulf since 1933. Its activities in the region are conducted through direct presence, joint ventures, strategic alliances, and a wide network of distributors. GE has completed strategic projects in various hi-tech industrial sectors, defence-related contracts and major infrastructure developments.

GE is a diversified technology, manufacturing and services company based on more than a century of achievement and innovation. Today, it is the only company listed in the Dow Jones Industrial Index that was also included in the original listing of 1896. GE operates in more than 100 countries and employs nearly 300,000 people worldwide.
