GE welcomes the Government's announcement today that a carbon price will be introduced on 1st July 2012.
Steve Sargent, President and CEO, GE Australia and New Zealand said: "We have long been an advocate of a price
on carbon as a means to affect real change in the way Australia tackles carbon emissions and the threat of climate
change."
"The longer we wait for a carbon price, the higher the environmental and economic cost will be, so it is very
encouraging that the Government is setting a clear tone by announcing a fixed price from 1ST July 2012. This will
be a good start, but we have got to build a transition to a market based scheme in the longer term."
"Other countries have successfully implemented carbon price schemes without causing any negative impacts on
their economy. In fact, we see the move towards a clean energy future as the opportunity of the century to
strengthen business and economic prosperity. Let's use these lessons from abroad, with support from industry
and business in Australia, to ensure we are able to successfully push this positive change through."
"Business, Community and Government need to lead the change, and certainly this announcement is a good
starting point to incentivise investment and innovation in carbon reduced industries and clean energy
technologies".
