OSLO, NORWAY (October 21, 2003) --- GE Hydro has received a contract of US$4.16 million from Vattenfall AB of Sweden to refurbish a generator at the Bastusel Power Plant on the Skellefte ävl, a river in northern Sweden.
GE will supply a new stator, rotor poles and excitation equipment for the Elin generator at the Bastusel facility. The 114-megawatt hydro plant, owned by Vattenfall, is located about 250 kilometers west of Luleå, Sweden and has been in operation for more than 30 years. GE's partner for this project, ElektroSandberg AB of Sweden, will handle much of the site work and will deliver the excitation equipment.
Through the refurbishment, the generator's power rating will be increased from 115 to more than 133 megavolt amperes (MVA), to meet the plant operator's voltage control requirements. The machine will have a head of 67.8 m and rated speed of 136 rpm.
The generator stator was damaged during 2001 due to overheating, and temporary repairs were done at that time. The refurbishment also will optimize the unit's future performance, minimize environmental impact and obtain a safe working environment.
Equipment for the generator refurbishment will be delivered from GE Hydro Canada to the project site in April and May of 2004. The generator will be returned to commercial service in September of 2004.
