LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (December 9, 2003) --- GE Power Systems has been awarded a contract of nearly $18 million by the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority to provide a Frame 6B gas turbine, additional equipment and services for the expansion of a power plant on the island of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.
The 40-megawatt class gas turbine will be installed at the Randolph E. Harley Power Plant at Krum Bay on the south side of St. Thomas. Once the project is completed, the output of the expanded plant will be approximately 180 megawatts which will be used to meet a growing need for power in the region.
GE will provide turnkey and training services for the project.
The gas turbine, built at GE's facility in Belfort, France, will operate in simple-cycle mode and will feature a standard combustion system utilizing water injection for emissions control.
The equipment will be shipped at the end of the first quarter in 2004, with installation scheduled for the second and third quarters of 2004. The unit is expected to begin commercial operation by September 30, 2004.
