Appliances, Lighting, Electrical Distribution Products Selected for Solar-Powered House Competition
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.---Sept. 30, 2011---GE (NYSE: GE) is working closely with a team of Purdue University students who are among the elite competitors in the 2011 Solar Decathlon, an international solar energy home-building contest.
The biennial Solar Decathlon challenges collegiate teams to design, build and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient and appealing. The winner of the competition is the team that best combines affordability, consumer appeal and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.
GE's extensive support for the project includes a variety of products that are all featured prominently in Purdue's competition entry, as well as technical expertise from GE's Global Research Center (GRC) and the company's Lighting, Energy Management and Appliances divisions.
"We're proud to be represented in the Purdue team's entry with so many of our energy-efficient products. The entire GE team has enjoyed working with the students, faculty and administration over the past two years," said Gary Arnott, general manager of sales and global distribution for GE Energy Industrial Solutions.
"This is another exciting example of our longstanding partnership with Purdue," said Tony Denhart, senior services manager for GE Energy Industrial Solutions and Purdue Campus Relations Leader.
Purdue was one of 20 universities chosen in April 2010 to compete in the 2011 Solar Decathlon. The teams, including four from outside the United States, have designed and built affordable, esthetically pleasing and energy-efficient solar-powered homes that are on display at the National Mall's West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., from Sept. 23 through Oct. 2.
Among the GE products featured in the Purdue house are a heat pump hot water heater, clothes washer and dryer, kitchen appliances, lighting fixtures and electrical distribution equipment.
As part of its long-running partnership with Purdue, GE also has several electric vehicle charging stations at the university.
