GE Power Systems' Substation Automation Solutions Business Receives Five Environmental, Health & Safety Awards Over 13 Month Period

March 06, 2003

Three awards based at facilities in Calgary
ATLANTA, GEORGIA (March 6, 2003) --- The GE Power Systems' Substation Automation Solutions business received five different environmental, health and safety awards in a 13 month period, highlighting its efforts to continue to make environmental, health and safety activities a priority across the business. Four of the awards received by the Substation Automation Solutions business came from non-GE organizations, while one award was made by a GE organization, recognizing the business' efforts among all GE Power Systems businesses worldwide.
"Our commitment to environmental, health and safety is real and these awards merely provide visibility for actions and commitments that go on every day in our business," stated Carolyn Shockley, general manager for the Substation Automation Solutions business, based in Atlanta. "We are flattered that people inside and outside the company recognize our efforts to make our facilities safe for all who occupy or visit them. The benefits are obvious, from more satisfied workers who enjoy their surroundings to better processes and higher quality products. EHS activities touch all aspects of our business."
The five awards received by the Substation Automation Solutions business over a 13 month period were:
GE Calgary facility - Partner in Health and Safety Award
Awarded by the Alberta Government, November 2002
GE Power Systems' Calgary manufacturing facility was recognized as a Partner in Health & Safety by the government of Alberta in Canada. "Partner" status is highly exclusive and can only be achieved through invitation by the Alberta government. GE is one of 57 companies in the province to achieve this status. This certification designates GE as a leader in creating and maintaining a healthy and safe work environment in Alberta. First established in 1989 by the government of Alberta, Partnerships in Health & Safety was created to recognize that when employers and workers voluntarily work together to build a healthier and safer work culture, it ultimately leads to greater industry self reliance and less government intervention.
GE Boise and Chicago office combination - GE Power Systems Customer EHS Performance Incentive
Awarded by a GE Customer, June 2002
An EHS Performance Incentive was received for the completion of a major substation automation upgrade project with no recordable incidents. The business received a safety incentive towards the cost of the contract for meeting this requirement.
GE Calgary facility - GE Canada CEO Safety Award
Awarded by GE Canada, March 2002
The Calgary facility received the GE Canada CEO Safety Award for outstanding health and safety performance as recognized through an internal inspection and also for receiving the Certificate of Recognition through Alberta's Partners in Injury Reduction (PIR) program. The award from GE Canada CEO, Mr. R.T.E. Gillespie, was based on a recommendation made by Dr. Roland Hosein, Vice President, Environment, Health and Safety, GE Canada.
GE Normanton, UK facility - River Calder Environmental Stewardship Award
Awarded by Calder Futures Group, February 2002
The GE Normanton, UK facility received a River Calder Environmental Stewardship Award based on its development of containerised substations, which can be relocated and re-used. An additional benefit of these substations is that installation site time is significantly reduced to avoid disruption to the local population and native wildlife.
GE Calgary facility - Certificate of Recognition (COR)
Awarded by the Alberta Government, November 2001
The Partners in Injury Reduction (PIR) program is similar to OSHA's Voluntary Protection Program. The Certificate of Recognition (COR) is a highly valued occupational safety and health recognition from the Alberta government. A COR is given to Alberta employers who develop health and safety programs that meet established standards. Certificates are issued by Certifying Partners and are co-signed by Alberta Human Resources and Employment.
GE's comprehensive transmission and distribution automation assemblage includes expert services to cost-effectively manage and execute substation automation projects, from design engineering to installation and commissioning. The collection of services is complemented by an assortment of products and solutions such as controllers and intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), portable test equipment, and transformer management systems which enable utility personnel to further improve asset performance and network reliability.
