GE Opens Office to Serve as Hub for Energy Activities in Turkmenistan

May 23, 2011

  • Ashgabat Facility Underscores GE Commitment to the Region's Growth
  • Supports GE Localization Strategy of Being Closer to the Customer

ASHGABAT, TURKMENISTAN---May 23, 2011---Demonstrating its commitment to the continuing development of Turkmenistan's energy infrastructure, GE (NYSE: GE) has opened its first office in the country. Located in the capital of Ashgabat, the office will serve as the hub of GE Energy's growing activities in Turkmenistan's power generation and delivery sectors.

The office will include a training facility and a technology showcase. The initial staff will include commercial and technical engineers to support ongoing activities in the power generation and oil and gas sectors.

A ribbon cutting ceremony marking the official office opening was held in conjunction with the Second Annual Business Mission to Turkmenistan, organized by the U.S.-Turkmenistan Business Council in cooperation with the U.S. Embassy and held May 18-20.

"Our goal is for the Mission's members to walk away from our office with a greater understanding of our energy business and with a sense of our commitment to the region," said Joe Carelli, managing director for GE Energy in the Caspian region.

"The new office illustrates our localization strategy for Eastern Europe and the CIS and will enable us to quickly respond to local customers' needs," Carelli added. "It will provide vital support as we continue to develop cleaner, smarter and more efficient energy solutions that help the region expand and diversify its energy resources."

The Ashgabat office builds upon GE's already strong presence in Turkmenistan. GE installed gas turbines have the capacity to generate more than 1,700 megawatts of electricity in the country. In addition, GE provides water purification and oil and gas technology in Turkmenistan.
