GE Oil & Gas To Supply Compressors For Reliance Petroleum Ltd's Refinery Project In India

July 06, 2006

Project Will Create World's Largest Refinery Complex

Mumbai, July 6, 2006 - GE's Oil & Gas business will supply compression technology to Reliance Petroleum Ltd. (RPL) for a greenfield project in Jamnagar that will result in the world's largest refinery complex at a single location, with the capacity to process almost 2% of the world's crude oil.

The Jamnagar Export Refinery is located in a Special Economic Zone adjacent to an existing refinery owned by Reliance Industries, Ltd. (RIL) that currently ranks as the third largest single-location refinery in the world. RIL created RPL as a startup venture for the Jamnagar refinery project. The 27 million tonne refinery project is expected to help transform India from a net importer to a net exporter of petroleum products, with target export markets including Europe, the United States and the Far East.

When the new 580,000 barrel-a-day refinery project is completed in December 2008, the total capacity for the RIL-RPL Jamnagar site will be more than 1.2 million barrels per day.

"We are extremely pleased that GE technology has been chosen to help support this energy infrastructure project, which will provide significant benefits to the Indian economy," said Mohammad Ayoub, Regional General Manager, GE Oil & Gas -- India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

"Lower lifecycle costs translate into high long-term profitability. That's why leading oil and gas operators such as Reliance have been traditional users of GE equipment and services, that have enhanced productivity and are backed by comprehensive support and reliability," Ayoub added.

GE has been a long-standing partner of Reliance in the Oil and Gas sector. GE supplied similar machines to Reliance for an earlier project in 1997 and 1998.

GE will supply three reciprocating compressors, two screw compressors and spare parts for the project. The reciprocating compressors will be manufactured at GE's Oil & Gas facilities in Florence, Italy, while the screw compressors will be supplied from GE's plant in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The equipment will be shipped during the first and second quarters of 2008.

GE's Oil & Gas business manufactures a complete range of compressors for all major compression services. These machines are used in oil and gas production, gas transportation, refinery and petrochemical industries.

GE's Oil & Gas business is a world leader in advanced technology turbomachinery products and services, with engineering and manufacturing centers of excellence throughout Europe and the United States. Based in Florence, Italy, the company offers complete solutions for production, LNG, transportation, storage, refineries, petrochemicals and distribution systems, as well as pipeline integrity solutions including analysis and pipeline asset management.
