ATLANTA, GEORGIA (March 26, 2003) ---Under a multi-million contract of approximately US $2.2 Million, GE Network Solutions is supplying software technology, installation services and training to Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) for a New Distribution Information System (NDIS).
The NDIS, scheduled to begin operation early this year in 2003 at KEPCO's Seoul offices headquarters, is part of the company's overall program to upgrade its information system. KEPCO first launched a NDIS at its Inchon facility in September 2002, also featuring GE Network Solutions technology. Along with Inchon and Seoul, 132 other KEPCO branch offices are slated for NDIS installations following the completion of the initial data capture projects, currently under way.
KEPCO decided to upgrade from its previously used KEPCO Distribution System based on IMS Graphical Facilities Information System (GFIS)™ to NDIS technology to more effectively address its company-wide information management requirements.
"In 1997, KEPCO began its search for new technology with the capacity to handle a number of growing issues KEPCO was experiencing, namely, the ability to handle numerous engineering drawings, with increasing units of poles and distribution lines. We were also hampered by the limitations inherent to a "text-only" system. There were other considerations as well, such as our need to prepare the market for outages and High Quality of Service. There was also KEPCO's need to comply with NGIS (National GIS) requirements which were being driven by the Korean Government as part of a ten year project," said Sung-Hwan Bae, manager, Distribution Technology Team, Distribution Department of KEPCO. "KEPCO has every confidence in the high level of quality work and customer service GE Network Solutions has demonstrated from the very beginning and throughout this project."
For the Seoul installation, GE provided its Smallworld Core Spatial Technology product, persistent cache for remote client support, a DXF translator and Oracle interface software. The NDIS application will include:
* Design and construction management
* Outage management and operation
* Engineering calculations such as load analysis and short/ ground current calculations
* Business/interior wiring and metering
* High voltage schematics diagram management
* High voltage skeletons diagram management.
* Ability to manage the enormous amount of data required for the utility's complex day-today operations.
The NDIS will be implemented at about 180 local KEPCO offices by 2005.
"Our Smallworld Core Spatial Technology products are designed to meet the requirements of our customers across a broad spectrum of information system applications," said Henry Stueber, president, GE Network Solutions. "We are extremely pleased that KEPCO, one of the world's leading energy companies, continues to employ our latest technology to expand and enhance its information system."
