GE launches breakthrough new DNA scanner at World Forensic Congress

September 03, 2013

  • GE-Life Sciences launches new DNA analyser technology
  • Scanner reduces DNA identification to less than 85 minutes

GE's Life Sciences will today launch their new DNA analyser technology - DNAscan™ at the 25thWorld Congress of the International Society for Forensic Genetics, hosted at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre.

About the size of a printer, it uses a process called microfluidics whereby the scanner analyses a DNA sample and provides results in less than 85 minutes.

Designed for police departments, national security agencies, immigration and the military the Rapid DNA Analysis™ System is fully operator independent with all reagents and materials preloaded into one self-contained, single-use BioChipSet cassette.

On-board security maintains data privacy and tracks chain of custody, ensuring the portable device can be securely transported to aid emergency services in the field.

Dr Brian Hood, General Manager of GE's Life Science A&NZ says the painstaking process of human identification will become a thing of the past.

"Profiling as we know it today has come a long way since fingerprinting was introduced over 100 years ago. We know our customers are looking for reliable high-quality equipment that will move beyond the limited scope of current technology. Conventional analysis of suspect DNA can be a long process taking days, weeks, even months.

The new DNAscan™ will become the new trend in everyday identification. We are very excited about the science behind the scanner; the potential benefits for law enforcement as well as emergency response agencies for human identification are significant. " said Dr Hood.

The new DNAscan™ will now tour the country as part of a GE Life Sciences road show.
