GE Inspires Malaysia's Next Generation of Innovators

September 07, 2012

Kuala Lumpur, 7 September 2012 -- General Electric (GE) recently organized chaperoned tours for two groups of students from SMK Seri Desa, Tanjung Karang and SMK Bandar Baru Ampang around GE Engine Services Malaysia's (GEESM) premises and Petrosains respectively.

The tours were held in conjunction with the second phase of Teach For Malaysia (TFM) Week, which is aimed at inspiring students through workplace visits and tours to provide a boost of motivation for students by giving them insights into real-life work experiences.

The tour around Petrosains on 6 September was chaperoned by GE volunteers and TFM staff who took the students on an interactive outing where they had the chance to take part in activities aimed at encouraging creative learning within the field of science and technology.

During the tour around GEESM on 4 September, students were first briefed on safety by the GE Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) officer, before embarking on a tour around the shop, where a GEESM staff briefed the students on aircraft engine maintenance and repair. The students also had the opportunity to be involved in several interactive hands-on activities and a panel session with GEESM staff on the topic "Career in Aviation", which was aimed at motivating and inspiring the students to consider and explore a career in the field of aviation. The outing ended with a tour on a 777 and A330 aircraft with each student receiving a Certificate of Attendance for their participation.

"The event was a privilege for the GE volunteers and an extremely meaningful experience for everyone involved. We were able to touch the lives of these students by sharing our knowledge and inspiring them as they start thinking about their future. We all had a great time at the event," Suresh Shunmugam Managing Director of General Electric Engine Services Malaysia (GEESM) and leader of GE Malaysia's Volunteers Network said.

Commitment to Education
Earlier this year, two GE executives, Stuart Dean, Chief Executive Officer, GE ASEAN and Suresh Shunmugam, Managing Director of GEESM, taught a class each at SMK Bandar Baru Ampang and SMK Seri Desa, Tanjung Karang.

The GE Volunteers Program is supported by GE Foundation, which provides grants and invests in initiatives that work to solve some of the world's most difficult problems. As education is one of its core focus areas, the GE Foundation, in partnership with organizations such as TFM, is committed to working to facilitate the provision of quality education in Malaysia and around the world.
