Chennai, April 27, 2005: GE Elfun Volunteers, the global community service organization of General Electric Company, is donating ten new fibre glass boats and fishing nets, worth about Rs. 12.5 lakhs, to the fishermen of tsunami-hit Pudhu Kalpakkam village, near Chennai. The first batch of seven boats and fishing nets was delivered by Scott Bayman, President & CEO, GE India to the fishermen of Pudhu Kalpakkam Village Co-operative Society on April 26, 2005, The boats and fishing nets will be shared among the 220 families in this fishing hamlet.
The fishing boats and nets are a part of GE's efforts to provide long-term recovery support for the tsunami-affected. GE employees and its businesses all over India have contributed more than Rs. 2 crore towards this cause and GE Elfun Volunteers in Chennai and Hyderabad have committed more than 1000 man-hours in relief and rehabilitation efforts so far.
Scott Bayman, President & CEO, GE India, said, "Soon after the tsunami hit on December 26, 2004, GE Elfun Volunteers immediately swung into action to provide relief through on-the-ground sanitation and medical support and distribution of kerosene stoves, blankets, utensils and provisions. Now, our efforts are centred on long-term recovery with a special focus on helping the tsunami-affected regain their lost livelihood and education for impacted children. GE is deeply committed to this cause and on behalf of thousands of our employees and volunteers, I would like to personally assure the people of Pudhu Kalpakkam village that we will do everything we can as they strive to rebuild their lives."
GE Elfun Volunteers of the Chennai Chapter have also tied up with the Rotary Club of ChennaPatna to construct a new Primary School at Chinnakuppam village besides enhancing basic amenities in existing Government schools located in the region. A brand-new compound wall has been constructed with the help of GE Elfun Volunteers around the 10-acre campus of the Government Higher Secondary School, Nemmeli, at an estimated cost of about Rs. 15 lakhs.
GE's contributions towards the rebuilding of tsunami-affected regions in Asia-Pacific exceed Rs 45 crore in monetary and material relief and rehabilitation efforts.
