OSLO, NORWAY (September 9, 2003) --- GE Hydro has received a contract of more than US$1.6 million from Vattenfall AB of Sweden for a major turbine refurbishment that is expected to increase the output of the Stalon hydroelectric power plant by nearly 20 megawatts.
The Stalon facility is more than 40 years old, and is located at Ångermanälven, about 60 kilometers northwest of Vilhelmina in northern Sweden. GE's refurbishment of the KMW turbine at the site will include a new Francis runner, new turbine bearing, high-pressure governor system and self-lubricated bushings.
When the refurbishment is completed, the plant output will increase from 113 to 132 megawatts, and the flow rate will increase from 65 m3/second to 74 m3/second.
The equipment for the refurbishment will be manufactured at GE Hydro's facility in Sörumsand, Norway. The new runner will be shipped to the project site in April of 2004 and the turbine is expected to return to commercial service by mid-June 2004.
Vattenfall AB, the largest energy company in the Nordic countries by generation market share, produces and distributes electricity for 2.8 million retail customers in Sweden, Germany, Finland and Poland. Nuclear, hydroelectric and fossil-fueled power plants account for most of the company's 20,000-megawatt generating capacity in the region. Vattenfall also has ownership stakes in power plants and utilities that serve about six million customers in other areas of Europe.
In addition to Stalon, during the past year GE Hydro has performed turbine repair and refurbishment projects at five other Vattenfall power plants including Ligga 3, Näverede 1, Grundfors 2, Laxede 3 and Akkats.
GE Hydro, a unit of GE Power Systems, is a world leader in the supply of hydro turbines, generators and related electro-technical equipment for the hydropower production industry.
