GE Leadership Signs "Statement of Support" for Guard and Reserve Employees
WILMINGTON, N.C. -- GE employees serving in the active Reserve and National Guard were honored today at GE Energy's nuclear energy headquarters in a ceremony conducted by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserves (ESGR), an initiative of the U.S. Department of Defense.
Members of the Guard and Reserve, as well as leadership from nine GE business locations in North Carolina, participated in the event.
ESGR, established in 1972 as an office of the Department of Defense to promote cooperation and awareness between the Reserve (both the National Guard and Reserves) and civilian employers, awarded GE the Freedom Award in 2004 for its outstanding support of its active duty employees. Tom Rumsey, a GE employee and major in the U.S. Army Reserve, deployed to Afghanistan with 3rd Special Forces group from 2003-2004 said, "I couldn't have focused on what I needed to do there if I didn't know that GE was taking care of my family back home. I couldn't have asked for more support."
GE, which is working closely with ESGR on a national basis, supports its employees serving in the Reserve through several programs including salary differential and continued employee benefits for families for the duration of the deployment.
"GE has a long history of active support for our communities," said Andy White, president and CEO of GE Energy's nuclear business. "That support certainly includes the National Guard and Reserves. Today there are nearly 50 GE employees from North Carolina on active duty. Employees who choose to serve our country make many sacrifices. We want to be a leader in supporting them through any difficult times."
Said General Russell Hargis, assistant adjutant general (Army) of the North Carolina National Guard, "Reserve service asks much of those who choose to join. We thank and congratulate GE on providing such strong and vital support to GE men and women who serve in uniform."
