GE highlights key technologies for a sustainable energy future at World Future Energy Summit 2011

January 14, 2011

GE's energy's technology and services supporting region's goal towards higher efficiency and smaller carbon footprint

ABU DHABI, UAE; January 15, 2011: To support the Middle East in meeting the dynamic energy challenges, GE (NYSE:GE) is once again demonstrating its commitment to smarter, cleaner and more energy efficient solutions towards more reliable energy and water supplies as well as a sustainable energy future at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) to be held from January 17-21 in Abu Dhabi.

Held under the patronage of HH General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and hosted by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (MASDAR), the theme at this year's WFES is 'Enabling Future Energy Solutions'.

"GE is leveraging its global capabilities to develop smarter, cleaner and fuel-flexible energy and water technologies that support environmentally compatible economic growth throughout the region," said Joseph Anis, GE Energy's region executive for the Middle East. "We understand the needs of the region and are committed to supplying tailored solutions to maximize the use of available resources so as to support the region towards a sustainable energy future."

Mark Vachon, Vice President, GE ecomagination, will be the keynote presenter at the WFES Technology Forum on January 19 at 10.45am, addressing attendees on the newest initiatives in ecomagination - GE's corporate initiative to help meet customers' demands for more energy-efficient products and to drive reliable growth. In 2009, GE invested US$1.5 billion on ecomagination R&D, reaching the commitment to double the company's annual investment by 2010 one year ahead of schedule. GE continues to be committed to unleashing new technology, and in 2010, GE introduced a new commitment to invest an additional US$10 billion in ecomagination research and development by 2015. Last year, GE also launched The GE Ecomagination Challenge: Powering the Grid - a US$200 million commitment to finding and funding the best ideas for modernizing our power grid.

Additionally, Frank Ackland, Regional General Manager, Digital Energy, GE Energy Services, will be part of a plenary session on January 19 at 2pm discussing smart grid and its role in renewable integration. Ackland will discuss how investments are required today to integrate the variety of technologies needed for generating decentralized energy. While revolutionary energy technologies are developed each day, the way they are applied to modernize and nurture the electrical infrastructure is really more of an evolution than a revolution.

Themed "Enabling the Future", GE's booth 5320, supports this year's WFES theme with the company's representatives on hand to showcase a wide portfolio of advanced power, water re-use and oil and gas technologies, including GE solutions for modernizing the grid to meet growing capacity, sustainability, economic and security needs. The highlights of GE's participation include:

  • Innovative and fuel flexible energy technologies including GE Energy's' Jenbacher biogas and natural gas-fired engines; and GE's portfolio of high-efficiency gas and steam turbines that offer enhanced operational flexibility and efficiency.
  • Crucial localization initiatives with some of the Middle East's leading energy and engineering services companies to complement GE's extensive local and international engineering and service facilities. For example, GE is an anchor partner in Abu Dhabi's Masdar initiative - a comprehensive response to the need for a global focus on resource conservation and the alternative energy sector. It is designed to ensure in the long term that Abu Dhabi retains and even grows its share of the global energy market.

With its global resources and experience, as well as its long and successful regional heritage, GE is well-positioned to understand and respond to the cleaner technology and efficiency needs of the Middle East.
