Dubai, UAE; May 8, 2013: GE Healthcare (NYSE: GE) is leveraging its participation at Africa Health 2013 to put the spotlight on the need for more affordable and quality healthcare solutions in Africa. Showcasing its range of solutions in diagnostic imaging, including ultrasound and computed tomography (CT), operating room systems including anaesthesia and surgery and Healthcare IT, GE Healthcare's solutions are designed to translate in both high and low resource settings.
"With the rapid rise of non-communicable disease across the continent, we see significant investments being made by governments across North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa to improve the healthcare infrastructure. As a technology and solutions partner, we are proud to support many governments and private healthcare institutions across the continent with a focus on helping healthcare providers increase access to more affordable and quality healthcare, improve skills capacity and ultimately support better patient outcomes," said Farid Fezoua, President & CEO of GE Healthcare in Africa.
At the exhibition being held in South Africa from May 7 to 9, 2013, at the Gallagher Conventıon Center, Hall 3 No: 3E40, GE Healthcare is displaying a range of technologies aimed at complementing efforts to meet the evolving needs of customers in oncology, cardiology and women's and maternal health, as well as reiterating its approach to building sustainable partnerships across the region.
Among the new solutions being highlighted are the new Brivo* CT 385 system; the CentricityTM PACS and PACS-IW with Universal Viewer that put a wealth of data and clinical insight within radiologists' reach to improve efficiency; and the Vscan* pocket-sized visualization tool, developed to deliver imaging capabilities at the point-of-care.
Brivo* CT385
With advanced features, more efficient imaging workflow, lower dose exam throughput and high image quality, the 16-slide Brivo* CT385 has the potential to help bring solutions to clinical challenges across many parts of Africa. A proven leader in dose-reduction technologies, GE Healthcare continues to develop important dose-optimization features available across all platforms. The Brivo CT385 offers many tools to help manage dose, with clinically diagnostic image quality designed to detect pathologies and view anatomical structures with unprecedented detail and full dose control, thanks to innovative technologies such as IQ Enhance. In low resource settings, the system also has the potential to reduce annual electricity consumption by 68 percent with GE's innovative energy-saving mode software.
CentricityTM PACS and PACS-IW with Universal Viewer
GE Healthcare is introducing its innovative CentricityTM PACS and PACS-IW with Universal Viewer for the first time in Africa. Designed to put clinical insight within reach to help radiologists and referring physicians deliver patient results more efficiently, Universal Viewer is an intuitive workspace that brings together advanced visualization, intelligent productivity tools, and multi-modality workflows for oncology and breast imaging - all within one tool that can be accessed anywhere, anytime, when there is an internet connection. Universal Viewer works with Centricity PACS, Centricity PACS-IW, and Centricity Clinical Archive. In addition, its unified, user interface provides a single look and feel that is easy to learn and able to adapt to radiologists' preferences, automating exam setup.
Vscan*
Initially launched in South Africa in 2010 to provide physicians in remote areas with imaging capabilities at the point of care, the Vscan houses ultra smart ultrasound technology that provides doctors with an immediate, non-invasive method to help secure visual information about what is happening inside the body. At almost the size of a smartphone, the portable Vscan can easily be taken from room to room to be used in many clinical, hospital or primary care settings. In the area of Maternal and Newborn Health, ongoing projects in Ghana and Tanzania are demonstrating a meaningful impact of the Vscan in a rural setting.
Fezoua added: "As health systems across Africa continue to transform, we understand that the future of healthcare is more interconnected than ever before and healthcare decision-makers are seeking more nimble, powerful, user-friendly solutions to help best serve patients and caregivers. With our focus on being 'in Africa for Africa' we will continue to invest in spending time to understand the needs of our customers and to leverage the best of our resources and capabilities to tailor relevant and meaningful offerings that address the varying healthcare needs we see across the continent."
A Gold Sponsor of Africa Health and a partner to many public and private healthcare providers across the continent, GE Healthcare is presenting its products, services and solutions in line with its focus on strengthening Africa's healthcare infrastructure.
From North Africa to Sub-Saharan Africa, GE Healthcare has been active in the continent for over 100 years, partnering with some of the region's leading healthcare providers, including Ministries of Health and private chain customers. Today, over 25,000 GE Healthcare systems and technologies are deployed in hospitals across the continent.
In parallel, via its global US$6 billion healthymagination initiative, GE is also striving to increase access to high quality medical care to more people at lower costs. In Africa, healthymagination is contributing to the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals 4 (reduce by two-thirds the under-five mortality rate) and 5 (reduce by three-fourths the maternal mortality rate) by 2015. GE remains committed to impacting access and the continuum of care in rural settings and will continue to design products and solutions leveraging ongoing research and collaborations in the global health community.
