WILMINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 30, 2004--GE Infrastructure Security, a leading manufacturer of explosives trace detection and identification equipment, today announced that 39 GE Itemiser explosives trace detection systems were deployed prior to the recently concluded 2004 Olympic Games in Athens via a contract with the Greek Ministry of Public Order.
GE's Itemisers, configured with touchscreen native language software, were used in conjunction with complementary security technologies to help preserve Olympic security and public safety. In addition to providing security in and around the Olympic arena, the explosives trace detectors were used in a mobile capacity, providing law enforcement and security with personnel detection capability throughout the city.
GE Infrastructure Security, through GE Ion Track, has a well-established tradition of bolstering the Olympics. Since 1988, law enforcement and security agencies responsible for public safety at he Olympics in Korea, Spain, Australia, and the United States, have relied on GE to help step up security during the high-profile games.
According to Louis Parker, President for the Homeland Protection business of GE Infrastructure, Security, "This latest purchase from the Ministry of Public Order is the fifth contract between GE and various Greek government agencies over the past 18 months. GE has now supplied more than 60 desktop and walk-through explosives trace detection systems to Greek authorities for courthouses, airports, and police security applications."
Earlier this month, GE Infrastructure, Security announced that the United States Department of the Interior had deployed several GE EntryScan3 walk-through explosives detection portals and Itemisers to help strengthen the checkpoint security at the Statue of Liberty.
