GE Healthcare unveils innovative oncology care solutions

February 01, 2011

  • Led by healthymagination, GE's initiative to provide access for more patients to quality healthcare at a lower cost
  • Clinical tools can make a difference in patient care, from research through treatment and follow up

Dubai, UAE; February 2, 2011: GE Healthcare, the healthcare business of General Electric Company (GE), is helping strengthen cancer diagnosis and care across the Gulf region through one of the most comprehensive portfolios of diagnostic imaging technologies in the industry available today.

Oncology care is about making connections between the diagnosis, the treatment, the patients and the multi-disciplinary clinical team. GE Healthcare is offering healthcare practitioners in the region innovative oncology solutions that can have a transformational impact on healthcare delivery.

According to the World Cancer Report, cancer rates could further increase by 50 percent to 15 million new cases in the year 2020. The World Health Organization said that in 2010, cancer became the world's leading cause of death, replacing cardiovascular diseases.

Aziz Koleilat, General Manager, GE Healthcare for the Middle East region, said the new oncology diagnostic technologies complement the company's focus on healthymagination, a commitment to increase access, improve quality and efficiency and lower costs of healthcare.

"Major innovations in oncology imaging and treatment, especially in the last few years, led by the focused R&D efforts of organizations like GE Healthcare, have made it possible to treat cancer more effectively than ever. The Middle East region has high levels of incidence of cancer, particularly breast cancer, and timely diagnosis plays a key role in enhancing the efficacy of treatment," added Koleilat.

With breast cancer being one of the highest reported oncology concerns in the region, GE Healthcare offers a range of mammography solutions. GE's comprehensive product portfolio has been developed over half a century by working closely with mammography customers, with the aim being to deliver high quality, innovative, efficient and patient-friendly breast imaging products.

Interventional Oncology solutions from GE Healthcare

Interventional oncology uses precisely targeted, minimally or non-invasive procedures under real-time image guidance to destroy primary tumors and metastases. Now, with the integration of multimodality imaging on the workstation, interventional radiologists can employ new functionalities to help them tackle even the most complex lesions. Advanced tools from GE Healthcare include rotational imaging on Innova™ interventional imaging systems and the Advantage Workstation™ (AW) VolumeShare™.

Low dose solutions from GE Healthcare

Reducing radiation exposure to oncology patients and still delivering high-definition images -- this has always been a challenge facing the oncology multidisciplinary teams, especially in pediatrics or when dealing with organs highly sensitive to radiation.

GE Healthcare's ASiR™ (adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction) low dose reconstruction technology, available on GE Discovery™ CT750 HD and LightSpeed™ VCT, can reduce dose by up to 40-50 percent while maintaining image quality. GE will also launch in the Middle East the newest low-dose technology in the company's CT portfolio -- a model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) technology called Veo™, currently available in Europe.

Radiation Oncology Solutions in PET/CT, CT and MR

GE Healthcare's advanced multi-modality imaging systems (Computed Tomography (CT), Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) and Magnetic Resonance (MR)) are increasingly important for Radiation Oncology where new radiotherapy treatment technologies rely on high quality imaging data to achieve their full potential for patient treatments.

GE Healthcare's Discovery PET/CT 600 scanner, for example, combines advanced molecular imaging tools with diagnostic CT in one scanner, helping doctors with diagnosis, accurate tumor localization and assessment of how their patient is responding to treatment.

With the introduction of the new Optima™ MR450w Radiation Oncology Options, GE brings the benefits of magnetic resonance imaging for today's advanced radiation therapy. For sites with existing MR or those needing to expand services from diagnostics to Radiation Therapy, the MR Oncology package provides the optimal solution.

This year GE Healthcare showcased the latest diagnostic technologies at Arab Health 2011, with positive response from visitors.
