GE gears up for cities of the future with new City Infrastructure team

May 14, 2010

GE has set up a new London-based team to maximise the business opportunities and huge potential surrounding city infrastructure in the UK, as the emphasis on the development of green cities and a sustainable environment expands.

London 14 May 2010 - GE has set up a new London-based team to maximise the business opportunities and huge potential surrounding city infrastructure in the UK, as the emphasis on the development of green cities and a sustainable environment expands.

The 12-strong GE City Infrastructure team, headed by 15-year GE veteran Tony Gale, will draw on GE's established track record in developing and applying environmental technologies and other innovations in this area.

Tony Gale commented; "One of the benefits GE can bring to this issue is our range of technologies, products and services and our ability to provide an integrated approach.  The City Mayors and councils we talk to want to improve their inhabitants' standard of living, address capacity issues, but also achieve carbon and cost efficiencies.   We add value because we look at how technologies can work together to achieve this in a strategic way."

The new City Infrastructure team has a strong focus on London but is also developing projects with other cities in the UK and the rest of Europe.

Current GE city projects in Europe already include renewable energy projects, cleaner power generation, water filtration and wastewater treatment, smart building initiatives to achieve energy efficiencies, sensing and detecting equipment for security, traffic signalling and mass transit monitoring and management systems.

Tony Gale continued, "With London 2012 and other forthcoming infrastructure developments here, London is a major opportunity for us.  As a top sponsor of the Olympic Games, GE also has a lot of experience of working with host Olympic cities, and we are currently engaged with relevant parties to identify ways in which GE can help deliver a successful games and legacy."

Current GLA sustainability targets include a 60% carbon usage reduction in the city by 2025, all new homes to be zero carbon from 2016 and for London to be the electric car capital of Europe with 100,000 electric vehicles in use by 2015.
