- Plant Engineering Magazine's Award is the Industry's Standard for New Product Achievement
- GE's Arc Vault Protection System Has the Ability to Stop an Arcing Fault in Less than Eight Milliseconds
PLAINVILLE, Conn. --- March 15, 2012 --- GE Energy's (NYSE:GE) Industrial Solutions business has been named a winner of Plant Engineering magazine's 2011 Product of the Year awards for its Arc Vault protection system. The award is the manufacturing and engineering industry's standard for new product achievement and will be celebrated at an awards ceremony on March 26 in Chicago, Ill.
GE Energy continues to lead the future of electrification by developing lifecycle services and working globally to provide customers with best-in-class products like Arc Vault. It is a leading option for industrial, commercial and institutional customers seeking an arc flash mitigation product for their electrical systems.
GE's Arc Vault was recently installed at Penn State University. "With Arc Vault, we're looking forward to GE helping us with an arc flash study that shows a reduced hazard risk category and improved safety for our employees who deal with energized electrical equipment," said Edward Thomas, electrical integrity senior supervisor at Penn State.
"Winners of this highly regarded award are selected by a vote of qualified Plant Engineering subscribers---the engineers who buy, specify and use these products on a daily basis," said Bob Vavra, editor of Plant Engineering magazine. "They are the people who understand how new products reduce energy costs, ensure safety and improve productivity on the manufacturing plant floor."
GE's Arc Vault sets a new standard in arc fault protection. It takes a different approach than traditional arc flash mitigation products by minimizing the arc flash instead of containing it. Click here to see the Arc Vault in action. It has the ability to stop an arcing fault in less than eight milliseconds, a fraction of the time needed by other systems to stop an arc flash incident. Additional benefits of GE's Arc Vault include:
- Improved safety to maintenance personnel by providing significant mitigation, even with equipment doors open.
- Improved protection of electrical systems and reduced equipment and facility downtime in the event of an arc flash incident.
- Ability to reduce incident energy for existing systems deemed "too dangerous" to much lower levels without a wholesale change of existing equipment or significant sacrifice in system reliability.
- Ability to add to existing or new installations, providing the same safety, productivity and uptime benefits to both.
"Power system engineers face the challenges of assuring that facilities receive the power they need efficiently and reliably, while ensuring it is done more safely and often under tight budgetary constraints," said Marty Trivette, senior product manager for GE Energy's Industrial Solutions business. "Our Arc Vault protection system is an example of the comprehensive, end-to-end solutions we offer our customers to help them meet their needs. This product represents the height of technological achievement in combining fast, effective arc fault mitigation with the need for efficient, reliable delivery of adequate power."
The Arc Vault is one of several GE product options for arc flash mitigation. Additional GE products such as the ultra-selective EntelliGuard* trip units, the EntelliGuard* Retrofit Breaker, the sophisticated Entellisys* low-voltage switchgear and LimitAmp* arc resistant medium voltage motor control centers all provide users a safer electrical system.
GE Energy's Industrial Solutions business also offers a variety of professional services designed to create a safer work environment. For example, customers can request an on-site arc flash hazard analysis to learn about their level of risk. Additionally, GE Energy offers NFPA70E and electrical safety training.
