Abu Dhabi, UAE, 30 January, 2006: GE Energy will be showcasing its new evolution compressor for frame B/E gas turbines at this year's Power-Gen Middle East taking place in Abu Dhabi. GE recently signed a contract to install its first evolution compressor at Midway Sunset Cogeneration Company's (MSCC) power plant near Taft, California.
GE's Evolution Compressor is a fully redesigned compressor for frame B/E gas turbines. GE used innovative technology and advanced three-dimensional aerodynamic design in the redesign, which provides significant performance improvements in both output and heat rate.
The new Evolution Compressor is the first phase of the multi-phased Evolution program aimed at enabling future output and heat rate improvements to existing 7B through 7EA and 9E gas turbines. In addition to offering increased thermal performance, this compressor redesign retains all current parts and rotor life estimates and is designed to enable future firing temperature increases.
Development of the new Evolution Compressor design began in 2002. It incorporates extensive GE experience in compressor design and a significant number of design practices learned from field lessons. The blades were designed utilizing a 3D aerodynamic design methodology that is used for GE aircraft engines.
There will be a full compressor test of this product in Massa, Italy in Spring 2006. The test vehicle was shipped to Massa from the GE facility in Belfort, France in late 2005. This test will completely map the aerodynamic characteristics of the compressor and validate the performance improvement.
"Output increases are crucial in the Middle East. Our new evolution compressor value pack will help customers improve the heat rate of their gas turbines as well as increase the output of their plants in a cost-effective manner," said Abdullah Taibah, Region Executive and General Manager, GE Energy, Middle East & Africa.
GE Energy's services business provides a comprehensive portfolio of offerings to customers in the power generation, power delivery and industrial segments.
Power-Gen Middle East 2006 will take place from 30 January to 1 February at the Abu Dhabi International Exhibitions Centre (ADIEC). The GE booth number is G4.
