Dubai, 12 February, 2006: GE, the global technology, media and financial services company, raised AED 16,500 for cancer research in the UAE by taking part in the Dubai Terry Fox Run 2006 - Marathon of Hope race for the third year in a row. Almost 80 charity runners from GE's Women's Network and GE Volunteers took part in the 6.2 kilometer distance run which started at the Wonderland Creek and headed out to the Al Maktoum Bridge before returning to the Creek.
"This year's race was the third year in a row that GE has confirmed its commitment to raising funds for cancer research in UAE. Already lead players in the fight against cancer through GE healthcare, staff at GE wanted to show their support of the Terry Fox Trust through donating both their time and money to help eradicate cancer and raise awareness," said Hayel Shobaki, GE Volunteers Middle East Leader.
Last year, GE raised a tremendous AED 16,000 for the charity and is looking to raise even more this year as GE looks forward to closing donations at AED 25,000 with Terry Fox Run scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on 17 February. The GE Volunteers and Women's Network are determined to make this year's run an even bigger success.
"Both GE Volunteers and Women's Network regularly take part in fundraising activities for local charities. The example of Terry Fox Run inspired the groups to be a part of a worldwide campaign that would make a difference on a global scale but also benefit those closer to home," added Shobaki.
GE Women's network is an inner-company organisation, which aims to support women who work at GE in their career development and help them to achieve work-life goals. GE Volunteers is a global organisation of GE employees and retirees committed to improving local communities, through volunteering, leadership and camaraderie with more than 49,000 members in 135 chapters and 3 subchapters in 33 countries.
Every year, more than 50 countries do their part for cancer research and have so far raised a total of US$360 million in the name of Terry Fox Run. All proceeds from the event are donated to the Terry Fox Organisation to support cancer research in the UAE.
