Doha, Qatar, December 1, 2006: Five employees of General Electric, the official partner for the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006, represented the company and joined the Torch Relay that culminates in the opening of Asia's largest sporting event on December 1, 2006, in Doha.
Yasser Al Bassam and Khaled Al Saleh (GE Security); Hasan Dandashly (GE Technology & Learning Center), Mustafa Sharafudhin (GE Healthcare); and Eyas Qatanani (GE Corporate) were drawn from over 104 entries received from an on-line competition held in August to take part in the Torch Relay.
The longest-ever relay in the history of Asian Games, the Doha 2006 Torch Relay was lit on October 8 in Doha before setting off to cover over 50,000 kms in 15 Asian countries over 50 days. It returned to Qatar on November 25 and will proceed to the opening ceremony. GE staff will cover the final leg of the relay.
"The participation of five GE employees in the Doha 2006 Torch Relay is a reiteration of our commitment to the success of the event and a very memorable occasion for all of us at GE," said Mr Nabil Habayeb, President and CEO, GE Middle East and Africa. "Doha 2006 brings GE -- the company and its personnel -- closer to the community and also highlights our technical expertise in supporting global sporting events."
As official partner of Doha 2006, GE provides temporary power generation for approximately 40 competition and non-competition venues around Doha. GE Energy is distributing 100 megawatts of power, enough to meet the standard requirements of a City with 180,000 -- 200,000 people. This will include approximately 250 generators, 100 kilometers of cabling and 1,000 distribution panels provided by GE. GE's technicians are already in Doha finalizing the arrangements; installation had begun in July.
