Kuala Lumpur, December 12, 2006 -- -- Two hundred and forty children and a handful of administrators under the Cybercare umbrella were treated to an evening of entertainment during GE's annual Cinema Night for its community partners.
The children from ten homes -- Rumah K.I.D.S., Rumah Sayangan, Yayasan Sunbeams Home, Women's Aid Organisation's Child Care Centre, Rumah Hope, House of Joy, Yayasan Salam, Precious Home, Cheshire PDK Selayang, RACTAR --attended 'Barnyard' at TGV KLCC.
GE has a long-term relationship with CyberCare, a National Pilot programme under the National IT Council NITC. CyberCare focuses on nurturing the children using information technology.
CyberCare's President, Chew Hoong Ling said, "While we focus very much on education and character building programs in the CyberCare network, we also welcome activities like this to help children fill their time during school holidays. Movies can then turn into discussion topics on our weekly Youth Leadership Mentoring program where children will discuss in depth of what they have learnt from the movie.
We call these teachable moments and YLM is used to polish the "gems" (values) found in these children," she explained.
Last year, the children were treated to 'King Kong', a Universal Production, which is part of NBC Universal, GE's media and entertainment business. GE also sponsors annual subscription of reading materials to the Homes as well as lighting from its Lighting business.
To encourage the children to do better at school, both GE and Cybercare run the 'Cybercare GE Challenge'. Students with the best improvement in results win gift vouchers and GE Olympic merchandise. The Homes with the highest percentage of entrees stand to win a year's subscription of National Geographic magazine and newspapers.
Stuart Dean, President, GE Southeast Asia, said, "Our relationship with Cybercare reflects our work globally, where GE has been contributing to strengthen education, improve the well-being of children and communities, and also promote the entrepreneurship of young people."
