GE Breakthroughs Seek to Re-invent Cardiovascular Ultrasound

December 06, 2007

New Features Bring Additional Utility to the Vivid e and Vivid 7 Dimension

Bangalore, December 6, 2007- GE Healthcare, the US$17 billion complete healthcare and life sciences solutions business of global major General Electric Company (GE) and a global ultrasound leader, launched two breakthroughs for its popular Vivid e and Vivid 7 Dimension cardiovascular ultrasound systems today at the Annual Conference of Cardiological Society of India in Hyderabad today. Building upon GE's successful introduction of Vivid products in 2000, GE continues to bring to market quick, robust, high-performance and patient friendly portable cardiovascular ultrasound system reaching out to more patients.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for more than 16 million deaths annually. The majority of these deaths now occur in developing countries such as India, where rates of heart attack and stroke have ballooned in the last few decades. With its population of 900 million, India already has a major and increasing CHD problem which has doubled in both rural and urban Indians during the past 20 years. In addition, because cardiovascular diseases occur earlier in life in developing regions, the economic impact is enormous. It is estimated that cardiovascular conditions will trim more than 1% from India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2015.

As ultrasound machines become more compact and their image quality more precise, doctors have begun carrying the body-imaging technology to rural India. No longer is ultrasound available only to hospitals with reliable power supplies and room for bulky equipment. Cardiovascular disease is now a leading cause of death in rural India. There us a need to develop new health care services to address this huge new burden of chronic diseases.

Mr V Raja, President and CEO, GE Healthcare South Asia added, "Echocardiography has long been recognized in the broader medical community as a valuable diagnostic test for the evaluation of cardiac structure and function. Since the echocardiogram is a noninvasive test and involves no medications, patient can immediately return to normal activities. GE Healthcare is developing innovative ultrasound systems to help address some of today's most pressing healthcare issues such as improving access to quality cardiac care in rural communities, shifting to an 'early health' model where technologies such as ultrasound can be used to help detect diseases earlier when they can be more effectively treated and in a cost effective manner"

The 4D LV-Volume tool is quick, robust and intuitive. It is an easy-to-use tool even for non experienced users.

This introduction brings Ultra-Definition Imaging enhancements to the true real-time 4D imaging of the Vivid 7 Dimension. It combines image acquisition and processing technology to take imaging to the next level for an optimal image with one-button control. The new Ultra-Definition Clarity Control feature combines multiple 2D settings that reduce noise, keeping edges smooth without destroying fine detail. It enables image personalization for 4D, cardiac and vascular imaging.

"The understanding of depth in a live 3D-image, visualized on a 2D-screen, is essential - but challenging," said Mr. Ganesh Prasad, Vice President, GE Healthcare Clinical Systems. "With the two new features, 'Depth Color Render and Stereo Vision,' General Electric provides an excellent solution to overcome this limitation. Both new features support an intuitive impression of morphologic anatomic structures in a 3D-image and therefore simplify interpretation and 3D-navigation impressively."

Same Portability, More Possibilities
The Vivid e '08

Easy-to-use, automatic image optimization - in 2D, color and Doppler imaging - instantly updates thousands of parameters with one keystroke for optimal scanning. Measurements and analyses can be performed after the patient has left or at the end of the day

New features on the redesigned Vivid e include capabilities designed to bring more of what has made Vivid e the popular choice in physicians' offices since its introduction. In 2008, the Vivid e will add a fully integrated, three-connector, docking cart and stress echo, creating a hybrid system with the power of ergonomic console-style and the portability physicians have come to depend on.

The Vivid e will also expand the application, utility and workflow of GE's compact product line by completing the cardiac feature set with three probes - The P2D (pencil probe), 9L (vascular) & 8C (abdominal) probes as well as Tissue Doppler, activated by a single keystroke.
