General Electric (GE), a global diversified infrastructure and finance company providing global solutions for cleaner and more efficient sources of energy, signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities in generating renewable energy from Palm Oil waste, with Sinergi Perdana Sdn. Bhd., a business consortium comprising the Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA), Felcra Berhad (FELCRA) and the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (RISDA).
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, 7 Dec 2011 -- General Electric ("GE") and Sinergi Perdana Sdn. Bhd. ("Sinergi Perdana") recently signed an agreement to explore collaborative opportunities to develop renewable energy initiatives, with the primary aim of fostering efficient operations in the palm oil industry.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Stuart L. Dean, Chief Executive Officer, GE ASEAN and key representatives from Sinergi Perdana Sdn. Bhd., and witnessed by Azli Mohamed, Key Account Director, Strategy & Business Development for GE ASEAN.
Stuart Dean, Chief Executive Officer of GE ASEAN, expressed GE's commitment to working with local companies to develop environmentally-driven business strategies. This MoU is a demonstration of GE's role supporting the growth of the Palm Oil National Key Economic Area (NKEA) in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner, in line with the Economic Transformation Plan (ETP).
"We believe that a strategic collaboration is greatly beneficial to both parties as we cooperate in developing renewable energy initiatives in Malaysia. By combining GE's strength as a global solutions provider for alternative energy applications, with Sinergi Perdana, which comprises the nation's biggest plantation agencies, we aim to help convert waste to wealth to support the growth of the local palm oil industry. This collaboration will ensure that best practices are in place, whilst supporting the industry's growth to spur Malaysia towards its goal of becoming a high-income nation by year 2020," says Stuart Dean.
The MoU will see GE and Sinergi Perdana exploring the potentials to develop a renewable energy initiative involving the generation of power from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) for both captive power and commercial, on-grid application. GE's Jenbacher gas engines and GE-compatible anaerobic digester technology will be utilized to support this endeavor. The collaboration would also be looking on a prospective development of a waste water treatment solution as well as the solid waste gasification to power application.
Under the agreement, the two parties will work together to review the outcome of the preliminary feasibility studies and cooperate with each other to determine the most effective implementation solutions that will be co-beneficial and aligned with the government's efforts to establish Malaysia as a sustainable and green economic powerhouse.
Commenting on the strategic partnership, Sinergi Perdana Chief Executive Officer Mohd Zaid Abdul Jalil said, "The signing of this agreement with GE forms part of Sinergi Perdana's long term planning in providing platforms for our stakeholders to diversify into new business activities. Renewable energy has the potential to play a major role in meeting Malaysia's energy needs thus reducing its dependability on fossil fuels, and Sinergi Perdana believes that it is one of the sectors that can help propel the country into a high-income economy.
He also added the partnership with GE which will see the two parties work together to review the outcome of the preliminary feasibility studies and cooperate with each other to determine the most effective implementation solutions, will complement the government's effort to establish Malaysia as a sustainable and green economic nation.
This strategic alliance is also in line with GE's current chain of successful collaborations with local public and private companies across a wide spectrum of industries. These companies include NAZA Group of Companies, Petroliam Nasional Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and SapuraCrest Petroleum Berhad.
